As I said he could have achieved more and I would of liked us to have won something of course. But that doesn't mean he hasn't achieved anything.

Also you say Chelsea city and utd have won some of the biggest silverware multiple times, but city until this season had won a single league title and an fa cup having spent half a billion, now they've added a league cup. That isn't winning the biggest silverware multiple times.

Only utd and Chelsea have won a significant amount of trophies since our last trophy.

I realize the idealistic nature of the question but I guess it's framed as opposed to 'if a top class manager wanted to take over, we should still stick with Wenger.' In other threads I have listed the attributes of the club and how attractive they would be to top mangers around Europe.

we have switched form a team that can tough out the worst situations and succeed , to one that snatches defeat from a golden chance of success.

The winning mentality is gone .

Led by a man who doesnt DEMAND success ...failure is almost inevitable

I guess the later question is more direct and gives people a clear choice. Wenger will leave one day, so we do have to look for a new manager. I just don't buy this crap peddled by GBA that Wenger has done nothing in the last eight years. It was mentioned on a thread a few weeks ago, that it's probably only when Wenger does leave that it will be appreciated just how much he's done to keep this club in contention whilst moving stadium, the end of the invincibles, losing our best players every season and fighting against the massive artificial pump-priming of clubs like Chelsea and City.

Therefore, given that he's steered us through this time, it's only fair that he's given the chance to see this project through. We bought Ozil last summer and we've secured the long term spine of this team with players like Szczesny, Gibbs, Ramsey, Wilshere, Walcott. For all the faults of this season, it's still been an improvement on the last few years, so we're moving in the right direction again.

If and when the right person comes along to take over from Wenger I will welcome him with open arms, but that time is not this summer.

So yeah , we will give him 2 more years , make it a nice round decade of nothing.

He should have been gone after 5 years of failure.
He could have gone with a legacy of MORE success than failure , as it is , he will be remembered for his longer barren period.

As the dinosaur who couldnt change when the rest of football did.

" We only play one way " will be mocked instead of admired.

dont you think City have had to come from further behind than us though ?

They have been a NOTHING club for decades , NOWHERE , while we were winning the league .
We had a bit of a head start didnt we.

so many people are either too clouded by sentimentality of too sh1t scared of change that they will put up with anything.

IF we can get a manger who isnt inept , he could take us forward in one season more than Wenger has done in the last 5 or 6 , and people would be saying "Arsene who ? oh yeah ..that guy who used to be here ..the guy who oversaw the stadium thing "

Grasp the nettle ffs , sooner rather than later .

Everybody appreciates what Wenger has done:

-Maintaining our top 4 position and keeping us in Europe

-Making us a very stable and financial viable club

-Making us a very good prospective club

-The Emirates stadium and everything that comes with it

And all the other good stuff Wenger has done over the past 8 years.

BUT what we are saying, is that it's TIME FOR MORE, and that as far as we're concerned, all of the above is all we're going to get from Wenger, this is as far as he is going to be able to take us, maintaining our top 4 status, keeping us stable, but in terms of getting more, like winning titles, getting good records vs the big sides etc, then Wenger is not the man to get then job done as the present is showing.

It's now time to take the next step, from maintaining top 4, to winning titles and beating the best sides.

Well constructed post. You get a lot of stick for ranting and not structuring your posts in a way where it's easy to understand, so I thought it was worth mentioning that that was a well thought out and clear post :)

I think we are all in agreement that we are nearing the end of wengers time with the club, it just seems to be a disagreement about the best way of drawing his time to an end. For some of us we think it is sensible to keep wenger at the helm while we properly scout a new manager and prepare the club for the transition. Others want a quick fix and to replace him at the end of the season.

At least A87 can make a decent point when he wants to. This 'he should have been sacked after 5 years of failure' BS is exactly the type of mentality that has landed the Spuds and Liverpool in a cycle of sacking manager after manager whilst underachieving.

We're all in agreement that Wenger will be replaced sometime in the near future, but the process has to managed properly otherwise it's a step backwards. The 'get someone who isn't inept and we'll win the league in a year' idea is just a meaningless soundbite.

An argument exists on the subject of Wenger that maintains that with the right squad at his disposal, he is more than capable of winning trophies and therefore we should stick by him.

    However, this is flawed.

It is Wenger's responsibility to strengthen the squad in the first place! Failure to sign Higuain, Suarez and Ba during the summer, and not getting a striker in January is PART of the failure.

This failure is compounded by refusing to fight the top teams and make the best use of the resources at our disposal. As has been said before, Wenger's tactics against the top sides, especially away from home, is the football equivalent of trying to out-brawl Mike Tyson. The most successful sides of recent times have been disciplined and intelligent enough to improve their chances to win big games by being hard to break down and striking at the right time (with the possible exception of Barcelona, but our players are not up to that standard).

Teams win the league with hard-fought, tight games away from home against the top teams, resulting in draws or wins.

I believe Wenger's style of management is just as responsible for our failures as the quality of players.

And crucially, he is responsible for both!

Therefore we should make discrete approaches to managers like Klopp, and if they are interested, end Wenger's tenure at the club effective at the end of the season.

If they are not interested, see how Wenger does with a proper striker and a few other additions IF HE BLOODY WELL SIGNS THEM!!

Klopp is only just having to start dealing with the same issues wenger has had to face for years. Bayern have bought up all the talent and Dortmund get there best players poached every season. I want to see klopp dealing with this over the next couple of seasons before I consider him to be the man to replace wenger.

For me the most sensible thing to do is to short list a selection of managers we feel are of a good enough quality, then scout them for the next couple of seasons while wenger has his last hurrah (he's got us this far, he deserves his chance with the money to spend and to go on a respectful note). By doing things this way we can make sure the squad and club are in the best position possible for a new manager to step in and we can make sure we are certain about who to bring in to manage. I want a smooth change not some impatient decision that could well result in bad times for the club.

Look personally I'd love it if Wenger signs a contract and makes me eat my words and we see the Wenger of 2002-2005, if I could choose between a new manager and Arsenal success, or Wenger and Arsenal success, I'd have the latter any day of the week. Wenger's a legend, and when he does eventually leave Arsenal, it will feel very strange, and it will feel like there's a hole and something missing, the man IS Arsenal.

We didn't go for Higuain because we thought we could get Suarez, who we would have secured and possibly won the league if John W Henry hadn't blocked the move. Maureen wouldn't let Ba go either. So you begin to see that the equation runs deeper than just what Wenger decides.

No you miss ( deliberately ) the bit where i said we get a competent manager .

No one could describe AVB as competent , then they put a member of the coaching staff as manager , to say i was suggesting such a thing is rather silly, but it suits your purpose to divert the arguement so its quite normal.

a bit like " now the dust has settled. "

Either you are stupid or you think we all are .

theres nine years of dust , thats gonna take a while to settle.

Or saying euphorically after one goal " spin on that Giroud haters "

He is one of the worst strikers we have ever had , but he gets a goal you try to divert ALL of the criticism with a single goal .

It dont fool anyone except those that WANT to be fooled by it....i .e you

Chelsea have chopped and change managers willy nilly and STILL had successful seasons in despite the transitions , it hasnt disrupted them so why MUST in disrupt us ?

There is no logic to this argument that if we dump him at the end of the season we MUST fall in the same way the scum have .
    Thats just scaremongering.

It most definitely has effected Chelsea. They finished 6th one season and have had to stick with a horrible style of football as no manager is given long enough to develop a new style. It's meant the players feel more important than this managers most of the time.

The reason they have continued to win trophies during that time is because they have been able to throw vast sums of money at all there problems.

We ALL knew we were crying out for a decent striker , but the ONE signing he made was another midfielder for 42 million quid..

Coz we are Sooooooooooooooo short of midfielders .

To say Giroud is one of the worst strikers we have ever had is ridiculous. You've been a fan for 40 years, just think of the dross you've seen in that time.Giroud comes nowhere near them.

God your stupid sometimes. Take the quoted line as part of the full post please.

And no there hasn't been a proper chance with the money yet. You come across like an impatient child.

<doh> Where do you start with this ?

Maybe for you 'getting a competent manager' is like popping down the shops to get a new pair of trainers. Or maybe it's more like throwing a billion pounds at the problem like Chelsea.

    Neither are applicable to Arsenal.
