Need £78k today and another £300k in the summer to pay the taxman, or are dead, in 'phoenix club' zone.

We had a thread about Leeds' current financial woes recently. Very little sympathy shown. Any more for a minnow like Hereford? Anybody going to send them a £5 postal order?

I won't be, there's very little solidarity between football fans.

This is becoming more of a problem because the Conference is now effectively a fifth division but without the same promotion places that League Two enjoys. So many ex-league teams are overspending to try and get back and finding (a bit like QPR) that money doesn't necessarily buy success. Darlington went belly-up two years ago, Stockport have been in free-fall and Halifax went bust twice in ten years. To put it bluntly they get what they deserve but they'll always reform and come back again as Aldershot and others have done...

Sad really, I don't like seeing any team die off ( ok, Chelsea are an exception, maybe Citeh too, don't forget about MU ) .................. but anyway, I finding as I get older, I don't like to see too much change happening.
Call me an old fart or whatever but I like to see things today, very similar, if not the same as when I was young.

To go to places now that have changed in so many ways, nearly always for the worst, I find very disheartening. The memories ( places ) of yesteryear are often good and sometimes we like to revisit them. If they have gone for good or been change beyond recognition, it's like losing something that you value.

I remember as a kid, looking at 'Shoot' magazines nearly every week .................. reading everything, regardless who it was about or what division the team was in. Hereford were there of course, I always remember the 'umbro' kit collars and the black 'V' ............ like most teams at the time I guess.

I guess it is a bit like the 'old corner store', the 'old milk bar / hamburger store' ........... with the pinball machines lined up against the side wall.
The place would be filled with smoke from all us young so called tough guys blowing 'o' rings and hangin out!
We'd call out an order to Nick or Joe to make us a burger or a bag of chips, wrapped in newspaper, for only 3 cents.............. I can't remember the cost of the burger but put it this way, I had bugger all money and at max, I'd be lucky to carry 20 cents in total.

By the time I started driving, you could still go to the pub and buy a packet of smokes and get pi ssed for under five bucks!

Anyway, rant over but you can see how memories come about and maybe, just maybe understand why as we get older, change for the sake of change is not what we want.

I hope Hereford find a way to stay afloat.

They are now just £8k short of the £78k they need by Monday after a £10k donation from Bulmers (Heineken) cider. Still got two gigs by Omid Djalilli to come.

    Anybody send a fiver? I didn't.

Hereford United: Bulls complete £78,000 HMRC tax payment

Hereford United have averted the threat of closure by completing their latest overdue tax payment.

The Conference Premier club were short of their £78,000 target at Monday's High Court hearing in London to answer a winding-up petition brought by Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

But Bulls chairman David Keyte has now revealed that the club actually made an interim £40,000 payment last Friday.

"I managed to negotiate an agreement with the HMRC," said Keyte.

"That allowed us to pay off £40,000 on Friday last and then fellow director Dave Preedy attended court on Monday to seek an adjournment in order to give us time to raise the second instalment of a similar amount.“

"This morning's payment has been a combined effort which is how we can make this work."

Comedian and Chelsea fan Omid Djalili staged two shows in Hereford on Sunday to raise money, brewing company Heineken, who own Hereford cider-makers Bulmer, gave £10,000 and Bulls FA Cup legend Ricky George donated his £1,500 Grand National winnings from betting on Pineau De Re last Saturday.

Online donations and the purchase of shares and pitch squares have also helped raise a further £10,000.

The Bulls, who have been struggling financially ever since being relegated from the Football League in May 2012, avoided a winding-up order in January over the non-payment of their £36,800 PAYE bill for November and December.

Hereford United's average attendances have halved in five seasons on their way down from League One to the Conference Premier.

The club also faced a similar situation in 2013 but were able to settle thanks to a £70,000 payment from their televised FA Cup first-round tie against Cheltenham.

Hereford have attracted average home crowds of just 1,723 this season - half of what they pulled in at Edgar Street five years ago - and are still losing money by the week.

Needing home crowds of 2,000 to break even, Bulls fans responded at last week's home game with Grimsby Town, swelling the gate to 2,545 - but that dropped to 2,140 on Saturday for the visit of Woking.

Spirits have been raised, however, by Tuesday's 1-0 win at Welling United - the Bulls' first in 14 games and their first three points under new boss Peter Beadle.

Dressing room morale had been affected by the club's continued off-field struggles, which has meant salaries, both in and out of the dressing room, not being paid in full on more than one occasion.

But Keyte said: "The players have my word that their money will be paid even if the cash flow suggests it will be staged and late.

"I have also continued to speak to a group of potential investors who wish to talk further."
