There's a clear history in this, field an ineligible player, lose any points accrued in that match.

    1 point. Worst case scenario.

Got me by the bolloicks. He was our employee who was returned to his parent club, seems an odd one which is why it was not trumpeted by the EPL.

Taken from BBC Sports Football website.

Sunderland have been fined by the Premier League after they fielded an ineligible player in four league matches earlier in the season.

Striker Ji Dong-Won, 22, played against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United before Sunderland informed the Premier League they had made an administrative error.

It is understood they were made aware of the error in December and Sunderland settled the fine in early 2014.

The club will not be deducted points.

Sunderland were also fined by the Football League because the player appeared in the Capital One Cup victory over MK Dons in August.

Club secretary Liz Coley has left the club but sources at Sunderland insist it was not as a result of the error.

Sunderland were fined because they failed to gain international clearance for the South Korea international after he returned to the club from a loan spell at German club Augsburg last season.

The Premier League club did not realise they needed to seek international clearance for a second time when he returned to England. He should not have been involved in any matches before the club received written confirmation from the German Football Association.

The Premier League has refused to comment.

Ji joined the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee from South Korean side Chunnam Dragons in June 2011.

Sunderland took only one point from the four league matches in which the striker featured when ineligible, losing 1-0 at home to Fulham on 17 August and drawing 1-1 at Southampton on 24 August, before losing 3-1 away to Palace on 31 August and 2-1 at home to Manchester United on 5 October.

Ji also played in the 4-2 victory over Milton Keynes Dons in the Capital One Cup second round on 27 August.

In January he re-joined Augsburg until the end of the season but has agreed a four-year deal to join fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in July.

Sunderland have been fined after fielding an illegible player in four Premier League matches at the start of the 2013/14 season. Paulo Di Canio played striker Ji Dong-Won against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United, before the club realized their error and notified the Premier League of their mistake.

The South Korean had been on loan at German club Augsburg for the 2013 season, but failed to receive international clearance from Germany on his return to the North East.

According to the Daily Mail; rules B14.5 and U11 were broken as soon as the Korean played his first game of the season against Fulham on the opening game of the season.

However, the story may not end with this fine. This is because Sunderland gained a point in their match against Southampton. The Premier League rule book states: "Any club found to have played an ineligible player in a match shall have any points gained from that match deducted from its record and have levied upon it a fine."

The punishment has also angered MK Dons, who believed Sunderland should have been thrown out of the Capital Cup. Sunderland fielded Ji when they beat the Dons 4-2 in the Capital Cup - this was the start of their cup run to Wembley where they were ultimately beat by Manchester City.
    Poyet May Face Points Deduction

Sunderland, under new management of Gus Poyet, are struggling at the wrong end of the league. Having only won just one game in their last seven, the Black Cats are a worrying four points off safety, but have one game in hand. The club is shrouded in further controversy after it also emerged that the Sunderland owner sacked the club secretary Liz Short as a result of the error.

A points deduction for Sunderland would be demoralizing for their players and fans; yet give hope to their closest rivals; Fulham, Cardiff and West Brom.

Ji - who now plays for Augsborg, is confirmed to sign for Burussia Dortmund in the Summer. The 22 year old played a total of 22 games for Sunderland after signing from Chunnam Dragons in 2011.

It's more the fault of an admin f up than the player.
I can see other relegation rivals trying to stir something up here for you.

So if we had won the league cup, Man city would have been awarded now ! knowing our luck and it is amazing we have not lost points. But it is case of SAFC are down so let's get a kick in, the refs are bad enough but now the press. And Ji must have asked if he had clearance surely and they had said no before he played in the matches ? It shows how bad this club has been run since last year. And is there anyway we can get 6 points to get out of the bottom 3 !, maybe the appalling ref desitions we have had, mainly the unbelievable WHU hand ball which was missed is why the f a are not deducting points

Bollocks - if the press asked Arsene Wenger about it on the press conference before a game would he answer it or say "I'm here to talk about Arsenal" - Bruce should've said "Well that's their problem - I'm here to talk about Hull's game at the weekend" - It has **** all to do with Steve Bruce. No-one on here blames Bruce for the issue. He simply can;t stop talking about Sunderland - I would have respect for the bloke if he said "I'm no longer their manager so I want to talk about Hull" - But he loves having a dig at Sunderland.
