100% a failure. Unforgiveable. My unshakeable belief, regardless of who our manager is, is that Charlton are too good a club for Division 3 football and should never be forced to stoop to that level. Seems to me there is almost an undercurrent with some (not you, IA, but others) that they want Riga to fail because it will expose his predecessor for being the duffer he was/is.
If he hadn't been sacked, Parky may have taken us up that season...? But it's all academic now. Riga is the man to lead us to safety.
If Parky had been given the Carl Jenkinson money to buy us out of Div 3 (like Powell), he too would have got us up. I reckon we would have got at least 120 points that season under Parky. In fact....100% support for Sir Parky I say
I reckon Parky would have done OK with a bit of money, he seemed to have a good eye for a player, but had the unenviable task of cobbling together a squad with a bunch of free transfers, and using a budget of tuppence ha'penny to spend at places like Dagenham & Redbridge... Not exactly a recipe for success, so under those circumstances, I totally agree 100% support for Sir Parky indeed, so why at the time did you want him sacked Vol..?

Because he didn't get the Charlton manager's job on merit in the first place. Remember when Pardew was sacked....Parkinson was given the job on an 8 game trial basis to prove himself. The quote from then chairman Derek Chappell will go down in the annals (I think I spelt that right...) "Parkinson will be judged solely on results" Nope 8 winless games later, and much to everyone's astonishment Parky was given the job. I chatted with him at a pre season friendly at Barnet, a nicer and more genuine bloke in football you couldn't wish to meet. We lost 1-0 to Barnet that day playing Parky's trademark **** football, so although you could fairly argue that he was dealt a bad hand, given no support, and almost set up to fail, he was never a Charlton manager IMO.
You have got to be ambitious for your Club, Ted. I have seen us away at 55 grounds, and hope to complete the 92 before my Day of Reckoning. But in Cup games...not league ones

Absolutely you have to, but if the all important ingredient is missing, ie:- quality of player, then your on a loser, and we've had a bus load of team manager's who've found this out...

Remember it very well... Enjoyed watching them, but I would say there was good quality in that team... I was at The valley when they played Liverpool in a friendly... Some fantastic passing football from both teams... I think it finished a draw???

The years play tricks on the old memory, but I'm fairly sure the Liverpool friendly was at The Valley... I sat in the Covered End... Maybe part of the ground was closed off because I usually stood in the old East stand... I remember being impressed with Lennie's new signings, that and the quality of the performance was so good, I stuck a few bob on us to get promoted at 50/1 ew... I remember collecting my winnings so presume it was the year we got promoted..?
That would make sense if you were in the CE rather than the East - we signed lots of new players in the Summer of 1985, by then the East had just been closed after being deemed unsafe and we got promoted at the end of the season.
Interesting, thanks I could completely understand if you thought I wanted Riga to fail. I am aware I was much harsher on him last week than I probably would have been on Powell. A lot of it is down to Powell having a personality I want to succeed, and I don't know anything about Riga (albeit he seems a good person, and not Duchatelet's yes man). I'd like the gloating on both sides to stop, but I completely, 100%, want Riga to succeed. I still fear that he won't, despite two away wins at teams in mid-table. By the by, my answer to the question would have been no, not a failure for Riga. The big problems with this season were outside the control of the previous manager, and completely outside the control of the current head coach. I also wouldn't consider it an enormous success for either manager to keep this club in the Championship. Relegation would be disappointing, but not unexpected. Survival is par, not a cause for a civic reception at Sheffield town hall.
