There's a big difference between parking the bus and nicking a goal by a set piece and soaking pressure and making your chances.

Man U parked and scored a goal with a great header, they have a average team, what else were they to do?

Man yoo were outclassed, outplayed, scored against the run of play at home, got a player sent off.

    Fine advert for English football......not!

    Any biters?

  5. It was a poor effort from the lad but if I was going to describe him in one word having seen that incident, bottler would not be the word. In a CL quarter-final game against the current champions at 0-0 and he tried a dink? That's not something a bottler would try. I'd perhaps call him silly, young, naive or inexperienced, but not a bottler.

That is the sort of thing Messi pulls off regularly. Welbecks a skillful lad, but he isn't the best finisher, that's why I believe his future could end up on the wing. As he has the pace power and trickery to cause problems. He really should have tried to go round the keeper tonight, with the space that was there and the pace he has,but he'll learn from it, and he did play well apart from that poor effort. He gives us an outlet, which you need when your trying to soak up pressure

I think Man Utd did very well. Yes, they were at home. Yes, they've won the competition before. But, given their current form, a draw against the current holders (who are ripping most teams apart, almost all the time!) was superb. Admittedly, they have conceded at home, allowing the the dreaded CL away goal, but they performed fantastically well under the circumstances. I was impressed.

They need to improve for the second leg, (Sven Goran Eriksson voice) for sure, but they've got a draw to defend. I have my doubts about them scoring in Germany but, then again, I thought they'd get no result at OT, either! Do I think they'll win over two legs? No. Do I think they've given a good account of themselves so far? Resounding yes! Credit where it's due. <ok>

So basically we just need to realize that this is United's year, their title to lose, and all bow down before them. <ok>

( In my best UIR tone).

Well you did colonize us before we beat that ass. 'Merica and science and stuff.

    <yikes>

Bayern got the away goal, as good a game as that was for United, that away goal could be crucial!

Trying not to be over-critical, I thought that United did a lot of running and covering. Bayern held the possession and appeared to be fairly satisfied with a draw. It wasn't until United scored that they showed any real urgency to score. So United worked very hard and Bayern coasted and that's really all there was to it when you take the hype away.

Not colonized, seeded! You were descended from us and other immigrants (unless you are part aboriginal american 'injun'?) Also, beat what ass? We gave you the USA, Bluff. Like you guys with Vietnam ... let's call it a draw! France (the old adversary) was pressing us at the time. Most American histories forget that we could have crushed the American uprising but we might have lost Britain to the French (who were supporting America at the time) if we did. Sneaky cheese-eating surrender-monkeys! <laugh>

Er, pass. America isn't really that good at science. Some of their best scientists are purloined from other countries. America pays very well! Given their large population America is massively under-represented in Nobel prize winners. Also, opinion polls show that 3/4 of America don't belive in Evolution. South Park once humorously suggested that 1/4 of America was ******ed (Kyle: "at least a 1/4!"), I'd say that was harsh but a lot more than 1/4 are scientifically illiterate. England isn't great, compared to Scandinavian countries (superb scientific education!) and some other European countries, but we're getting worse due to American, evangelical influences over here (seen the effects, personally). Education, like science in general, is a passion of mine, so I apologise if I sound preachy! I have had a religious upbringing (of sorts) after all ....

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Man Utd need a biblical miracle to go through at the moment. They had little possession and few chances last night, but they'll have less of both in Germany, I'd suspect. As an English team, I'd like them to go through, but, on current form, I can still only see a home win in the next leg. <cheers>

In BCR's support, we lost the American colonies because we made the basic strategic mistake and split our forces - should not have left our copy of Art of War at home!

As for scientists. You do sound like a typical convert or ex-pat. It's not the proportion that is the critical factor but the quality of those scientists that we do produce. If you really want to blame anybody for that then direct your ire towards educationalists and politicians and the general 'dumbing-down' of education. The effect of evangelicals upon the production of scientists is very minimal - but it is your hobby-horse!

    I do agree, I don't forsee a happy outcome for United <cheers>

Its a fantastic result. Moyes will have more time now.

He always does well as the underdog as he can be reactionary in his planning and tactics which is exactly how we want Man U to continue to be. He has shown so far this season that he still isn't proactive enough to be be the Man United boss so long may it continue.

See Moyes is now saying that last night's result shows Bayern that "United mean business in the Champions League" . Add to that the number of ex-United players who are calling last night a good performance. The deluded crown now sits firmly in Manchester!

I think Bayern are very boring to watch. 74% possession with only 4 shots on goal is a joke and most of their possession is when they are going sideways. I would not want to be watching that guff every week.

But is that the way they normally play? Or are they doing what Liverpool proved time and time again in Europe - putting the game and crowd to sleep in the away leg?

Im not sure if they play like that all the time, I watched them against Arsenal in Munich and they were the same as last night. It seems to me that Pep has become so obsessed with possession that his style of play has become boring.

I do agree with your point though, sometimes away games in Europe are about boring it out but I just thought Bayern were a bit more expansive than that with the players they have and the way people have been talking about them.

I think it is very difficult to be expansive when the opposition are putting so many men behind the ball... There isn't much space to be expansive in when they are refusing to be drawn out, and want to plays on the counter - no matter how skillful you are you do have to play in front of the defense if they will not come out to play ...
