Technically speaking I'm a "Spud head" myself, me being a Paddy an' all. But I think it works well for you lads too
We find it funny anyway mate. As long no one ever calls us a gooner or anything of that ilk, I'm sure most of us lot will take it light heartedly
I literally just burst out laughing at this. Reading "mash them up" reminds of my old school days talking about having fights with another school, "ahh yeah, we'll mash them up man innit!".
Assou-Ekotto's been charged with, er... something or other, over something that he posted about the quenelle gesture on Twitter. Nasri and Sakho have been given warnings, as the FA likes the money that their clubs bring in, whereas Sagbo and our loanee have been charged. Not only are their particular offences improper conduct, but they're aggravated breaches too, apparently. I'd love to know why it's been decided that talking about it online is somehow worse than actually being photographed doing it. Very strange standards being applied here.
Just more examples of an increasingly repressive society where conformity to mass rules is expected. I do not support rasism or anti semitism in any way whatsoever, I have faught it all my life, long before it was 'fashionable' but gagging people with perceived obnoxious views just sweeps it under the carpet and stores up trouble for the future. We need this crap out in the open so that it can be confronted. In the case of the Black French footballers and their comedian friend they all claim that this gesture is ant establishment and not anti semetic. This shows you the complications of censuring people because of gestures. The thought police are here and just because they sometimes support a worthy cause it does not make them acceptable. I worry much more about them than a few footballers making unwise comments.
Well said, Spurf - you mirrored my thoughts to the letter Footballers - and 'personalities' in general - do have a responsibility as their actions do have a wider audience and potential influence than the average joe soap. However, society is now moving to a level of repression and monitoring that is not healthy.
I can't say that I have a problem with the FA/UEFA/FIFA or whoever clamping down on players posting racist or otherwise bigoted views online, but this case is a little strange. The quenelle seems controversial and not widely known, so they might have been better pointing out that it was unacceptable first and then punishing people if they did it afterward. My problem with this one is that there doesn't appear to be any consistency, something which is progressively becoming the standard. Punishments aren't being dealt out equally for the same offences and that can't be right.
would n't suprise me if Herbert is behind this,or the governing body are pandering to his views to keep him happy
Can't agree with you more Spurf. As you will no doubt guess this is a topic that has repeatedly been discussed on our board. The problem as I see it is that people have had the right to decide for themselves taken away by particular interest groups and a media that is always searching for the sensational. The vast majority of us know that racism, anti-Semitism or sectarianism of any kind is wrong but we are not allowed to form our own opinion as to the seriousness of the incident. In this one there is at least an element of doubt as to the intention behind Anelka's gesture for French players. The vast majority of English supporters didn't even recognise it as a gesture. But then the FA have already made a noose for their own neck in the Evra/Suarez debacle by not allowing context to be considered - and by their own self interest (ie being seen to do right rather than doing right). It's just sad that this stuff gets in the way of trying to build a society based upon valuing people for who they are not what they are.
Assou-Ekotto congratulated Anelka on a "beautiful quenelle" and invited the comedian at the centre of it all to WHL, before being forced to delete both by Spurs, supposedly. Sagbo did something similar, posting a picture of the WBA striker doing the gesture and stating his support for Dieudonne. Nasri posed for the gesture himself: please log in to view this image He then issued a complete non-apology: "'The pose in the picture i posted over 2 months ago symbolises being against the system," "It has absolutely nothing to do with being anti Semitic or against Jewish people. I apologise for causing any hurt to anyone who might have been mislead into thinking this means anything of that nature." Sakho actually posed with the comedian himself, but claimed that he'd been tricked, as he didn't know what it meant. I can understand how Sakho might face a lesser punishment or even none at all, but Nasri's display has to be the worst of the four, surely? How does he get away with a warning and others faced not only charges, but increased ones? Senseless decision.
Ah well, they'd be mad to ban him for a tweet he's made so all he'll get is a pittance fine and a warning, like you do for homophobic Tweets.
The point is this, and it's a very simple one. That French comedian is not just anti-establishment, he's anti-semitic. Any show of allegiance to this dirt-bag must be seen as supporting his anti-semitic views. Ekotto brought the dirt-bag to a Spurs match after which he (Ekotto) glorified in our defeat. That anyone is showing any support for Ekotto is a demonstration of the ignorance they have for the disgusting views that he clearly holds. What would be nice is for all of those of have supported the scum-bag comedian to come out and (a) denounce him as an anti-semite, (b) apologise for having been mislead by his anti-semitic message, and (c) promising to forever distance themselves from his so-called comedy. I don't see any of that happening.
Um - is it not the case that approximately 40% of this post is total bollocks? The first two sentences seem OK and I can't argue with the last one but the rest? DID Ekotto actually come to a game with him? DID he "glory in our defeat"?! Really? I must have missed that. Funny how, since I follow Spurs and check the football news every day this incident of a Spurs player reveling in a Spurs defeat in the company of a fascist passed me by.
Think HIAG has moved to WUMing Spurs lately hasn't he? Ekotto's never glorified in our defeat for as far as I can remember. As for the anti-semtic jibe, supporting a comedian doesn't mean he shares all the person's views, many footballers support his views for the anti-establishment issue which is where the Quenelle jesture supposedly stems from, people have just assumed that because it's an "inverted Nazi salute" that it must be anti-Semitic, which is bollocks. Just like when authorities assumed our Campbell chant with the line of "hanging from a tree" was racist as they said it resembles a monkey which as we all know is a slang word used against the black race, when in reality the line literally means hanging from a tree with a noose round his neck (not that I'm saying that's much better ). Why would Ekotto - a player playing for a club associated with a Jewish following/ background - be openly supportive of anti-Semitism? It makes no sense and while footballers aren't the most intellectually gifted species, 99% aren't stupid enough to openly back racism or similar issues of the ilk and I believe Benny is among that figure. John Terry on the other hand... I support music artists that occasionally talk about cocaine and heroin, doesn't mean I support or glorify the use of class A drugs, I just like the music the artist produces.
Since January he hasn't given a fu*k and has had bust ups with players etc. We really liked him at the beginning but we want rid now. He's a waster. http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/256435-BAE-Charged
