I think if you read between the lines matth, they are suggesting that Gerrard has earnt that right throughout his career, he's just not been alongside enough other players that done enough to earn the same thing.
Regardless of what they are suggesting G, it's still bollocks. The Premier League trophy is an award for the best and most consistent team over the course of a season, it's not some lifetime achievement award for players who have played for teams that aren't good enough to be the best. There's no 'right' to win the title - you either win it or you don't. There's also quite a tedious nationalistic bent to the whole argument too. No one was arguing Fabregas, RVP, Desailly, Zola or any other of the massively talented foreigners to have played in the PL 'deserved' to win the title when they were the best players in otherwise underperforming teams. It's just the typical "English players deserve stuff they aren't good or smart enough to obtain" bollocks.
I think he deserves a title for the shift he's put in over the years, as in deserves to be in a team that can win it, that's all people mean when they say he deserves it. Roy Keane deserved a CL winners medal from 99 even though he didn't play the final. Why, because of how he played throughout the season in the PL\ CL. You can do your bit and earn something and yet not get rewarded, and the opposite is also true, you can do **** all and take credit(Terry McShinpads)
Still disagree tbh. Fabregas, Desailly, Zola, RVP etc all put in a shift over the years, and all are just as good as Gerrard. Ultimately, if Gerrard deserved it then he would have pulled out some of those magic Olympiakos / Istanbul / West Ham performances in the league in 2002 or 2009 and dragged you over the line, same way Keane did for us on numerous occasions. The only reason Keane deserved a medal in 99 was that we did win the trophy, and Keane did play a big part in it. Same reason Gerrard did deserve all his Liverpool medals, but doesn't deserve the ones he and the team haven't won.
If he does it this year in spite of City really looking like they'll take it, then people will say he deserved it. RvP a shift? Yeah on the ****ing physio's table, gimme a break. Great when fit, more than occasionally unfit. People say he deserved to win something while he was at Arsenal, but really you are saying he only deserved to win something after he joined United.?
If he does it this year, then he will deserve it. But then so will the entire Liverpool team. Will Sturridge really deserve it less than Gerrard on the basis he has had fewer years of failure in the league to date? RVP was just an example of another quality player spending a long time in an underperforming team who didn't deserve anything other than they got. Nothing to do with him joining Utd...tho' interesting you picked up on RVP despite Desailly, Zola and Fabregas all playing similar numbers of games over similar numbers of seasons. Good to know that even when Liverpool are top of the league you still jump on anything even remotely positive about a Utd fan. Put it this way, if Januzaj, Mata, Zaha or any other Utd player spends the next decade at Utd playing at the top level and not winning the league, I won't be standing here in a decade bleating that they really 'deserve' it. Because they won't have done.
If Gerrard is that good, he will lead Liverpool to the title this year and then he will 'deserve' it. If he was a really great player he would have won it by now anyway
Presume this is just a wum but what more could Gerrard have done down the years really? He's played in some awful teams and still managed to virtually single-handedly drag them to a Champions' League win. Don't see how he can be considered anything but a great player.
You saying Gerrard isnt a great player? Like I say, you just saying daft things that arent true for a reaction has got very boring
I think the "deserve" argument is hard to judge. Gerrard is obviously a better player than a lot of others that have a Premier League medal, just as Djimi Traore is much worse than most despite him having his CL medal. Its the way the cookie crumbles sometimes and players don't always get the medals their abilities deserve when matched with loyalty. Others get more than the credentials perhaps deserve. The only quality players with loyalty to match that have the medals to boot are the ones that came through the Man Utd ranks because the club matched their ambition. Does someone deserve more for being loyal? Does someone deserve to win things if they are the one of the best player around? Do individuals deserve to win things at all? Not really as its a team game. Man Utd weren't the best side we've ever witnessed last year but they deserved to win the league because they were the best team that season and that is what football is about. An individual may well deserve something but it doesn't mean they'll get it, they NEED the surroundings too. PS...pretty sure most players would love half of Gerrard's medal collection mind
You are back... just in time for poisson d'avril. We haven't seen you on the Chelsea board since your legendary 24 hours at the top over Xmas, before we thrashed you at the Bridge.
English players so overrated. Scholes closest in modern era. Last great English player could have been Gazza. Maybe Lineker. Maybe Keegan: two European POTY awards. Maybe further back: Bobby Moore or Charlton
