Building on the support thematic: Some of the old timers will be able to top my call easy, but thinking about it, in about 30 years of watching City, the best away support Iâve seen (from what I recall off the top of my head) is probably from Bolton Wanderers 92/93. Key promotion match for them, key relegation match for us. They brought thousands (official attendance definitely cooked), loud and intimidating before, during and after the match. They had the North and all of the East side of the ground (bar the crumbling bit between Kempton and Bunkers). Two late goals from them to virtually take them up cue amazing pitch invasions (think Rob Miller got twatted by them too) Certainly impressed me at the time and wished I could be part of something similar.
Numbers and volume: SAFC in the 70s, regularly brought 6 or 7,000 always created an electric atmosphere as they packed Kempton MUFC in 74/75: biggest away numbers ever ?
That was 75/76. They brought about 12,000. Never set foot in Bunkers. They were back again at City in August 77
Sunderland weren't just good in the 70's, they were excellent when they completely outplayed us at the KC in what, from memory, was the season they last got promoted to the Premier League.
It was a re arranged end of season mid week game and meant nothing to City. Bolton had to win to go up. Phil Brown was playing for Bolton. Millwall brought an impressive following to Boothferry Park for a similar game to the Bolton one. End of season midweek and they had to win to go up to the Premier League (or div 1) for the first time ever. I wished it was us at the time. Sunderland, Leicester, Boro and the Sheffield clubs all brought huge support to City in the 70's. One of our best away following was to Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup 74/75 ish. We had not took numbers to an away game for a while and for some reason this match caught the fans imagination and thousands turned out. Record crowd for Donny, broke a record that City already created there in Carters day's.
Not true mate. Pretty sure it was a Friday night match (dunno why) and that match was key for us too. We stayed up by the skin of our teeth that season – recall being on the terraces for the season's final match at The Hawthornes the week after and rumours spread we were down. Think results went our way and PNE and Exeter went down instead.
What was the reason for 8,800 Wolves fans descending on MK this weekend? Just proximity and the potential for some glory? It's quite disturbing that they helped set a record attendence at Stadium:MK of just over 20,000. Even in 2009, when MK lost the second leg of the league 1 play-off semi against Scunny, they only managed 14,479. I guess it's tough to travel up from Wimbledon on a week night.
Was that the game that they had to delay kick off and the announcer said there was more fans than they know what to do with?
Hard to be sure though I remember playing man city at BP in a cup game and they brought a load of supporters... We lost 1-0. Sunderland ..Middleborough and both Sheffield clubs use to bring loads ,
You could be right about the Friday night but I'm certain we had nowt to play for. They maybe repaid us a compliment for when we invaded the pitch before a match at the old Bolton ground in 70/71 ?
Sunderland and city fans in the kempton... Great times Leicester and City fans both in bunkers separated by a thin blue line , and sharpened 1d pennies flying through the Air I got my first Harrington jacket off a Leicester city fan before they had them in Arthur Masons.
what year was that ..dont remember that game or ever remember coppers in a line seperating fans in bunkers the Bolton game in the thread was friday night in the 70's lots of teams used to bring thousands...Forest was another memorable match with the traveling hoards when it was chaos all game
I was a mouthy young so & so 75/76 & remember getting a little slap from a bloke on Bunkers who got pissed off at me for repeating ''where was this lot when we played Oldham (I think) last week'' ........ we even had plastics back then !
Mill wall in the FA cup a few years back. Never seen an away side so intimidating. Bradford when they got promoted at BP was a decent following, the post match activity was explosive, to say the least. Bristol City at the end of last season was excellent support.
This vs Stoke in FA Cup 6th round.....when away supporters & city supporters switched ends @ half time Also City vs Villa, Boxing Day 1959...City 0 Villa 1.....Villa were promoted that season. 29,000 + attendance. We drew 1-1 two days later at their place. They brought a ton of supporters to BP on B-day...brilliant atmosphere & we were unlucky not to get anything out of the game (2 points I reckon).
