6 games left to play and after the attitude and performance the players gave against Newcastle i'm looking forward to a comfortable and entertaining run in. I think all Saints fans can agree that it's been a very good season for the club, but how good could it be in relation to our recent history and how close is this side to being the best Saints team since 1992 (The birth of football)? Only throwaway statistics can give us the answer! Current Standing Position..Team.......P.....W.....D...L....F.....A..GD...PTS 8 - Southampton - 37 - 15 - 10-12 -53 - 45 - 8 - 55 8 - Southampton - 36 - 14 - 10-12 -52 - 45 - 7 - 52 8 - Southampton - 35 - 13 - 10-12 -50 - 45 - 5 - 49 8 - Southampton - 34 - 13 - 9 - 12 -50 - 45 - 5 - 48 8 - Southampton - 33 - 13 - 9 - 11- 50 - 44 - 6 - 48 8 - Southampton - 32 - 13 - 9 - 10 -49 - 40 - 9 - 48 The Premier League has been 20 teams since 1995, so only fair to compare from this point on; Highest Position - 8th - 02/03 & 13/14 Most Points - 52 - 00/01 & 02/03 Most Wins - 14 - 97/98 & 00/01 Most Goals - 50 - 96/97 & 97/98 Fewest Goals against - 45 - 03/04 Most Clean Sheets - 14 - 00/01 (Currently 15) Goal Difference - -1 - 03/04 (We have never had a positive goal difference in EPL history) This side already holds the record for away victories in a season Individual Stats Most Goals - James Beattie 23 (02/03) - Surprisingly Lambert & now Rodriguez are equal second with 15 goals No stats on assists are available pre 2007, but Lambert's 10 for this season has smashed his 5 from last season. Steven Davis has 6 so far too How many of these feats of numerical significance can the class of 13/14 beat in the remaining games?
We're 1 off goals scored and wins, so them two. Don't think we'll beat our fewest goals conceded (Man City next!), but think we'll at least level the clean sheets. Think we'll come 8th, Rodriguez will get a couple more and think we'll end up with around 55 points. Lambert will lead assists with Davis just behind.
Hang on... didn't let tiss hit 28 or 29 one season? And Lambert's 10 compared to 5 last year? Thought he got 14 joint top enlish scorer with lampard. Edit: just re read the stats were for assists. Doh.
Le God scored 25 goals in 93/94 & 19 goals in 94/95....these seasons had 4 extra games. In fairness both are better than 15 as a goals to game ratio
Jay's goal tally so far is all the more impressive as it has not been supplemented by penalties and free kicks and the good news is that he is getting better and better. Rickie's goals and assists stats make nonsense of the claims that he no longer makes as big a contribition as on previous seasons. The dynamic between Adam, Jay and Rickie is special and is not something that we should throw away lightly.
My goal for a while has been 8th, 55 points and a positive goal differential; that would be beyond any doubt our best PL season. Two wins and a draw in our final six would be sufficient, though I'm rather partial to our nice, easily-calculated 1.5 points/game, so a final tally on 57 would be okay.
On the topic of inappropriate names can we start calling Gallagher '1-goal'? It somehow seems to have a positive effect!
Incredible, incredible, incredible. Amazing times to be a saints fan. No one replies "someone has to" when I tell them I support saints
I see all these stats come from the era when football was invented. Prior to that [like the Big Bang] there was just a gaseous confusion of balls, nets, pitches, stadiums and players, that were on the point of coalescing for about a 100 years. Even the spectators dreamt it all.
Off the top of my head - Lambert set up Rodriguez for our first yesterday, passed to Rodriguez for our third against Norwich and did that really good ball for our 3rd against Fulham. If we buy a replacement in the Summer, which we probably will, they better be good.
Remember Rickie's second England game...scored one, set up two and would have set up three if Walcott could have stayed on side...offers so much.
Since coming off the bench against Norwich Lambert has been back to his best. I think a lot of us feared he may miss out on Brazil if Carroll got a run together, but that goal against the Canaries and the coolness of the finish seems to have given him a lift for the run in. I'm really looking forward to the City game
Before Savage made the 'Carroll' comment there was a stat comparison on screen of Rickie and Jay. Although Rickie has less goals his assists were more BUT his 'chances created' stat was enormous in comparison. He definitely does contribute and obviously has been all season.
Jay is indeed on 15 goals so far this season, don't forget at the start of the season he wrongly had two ruled offside which should have stood. And on the Lambert/Carroll debate, even if I wasn't a saints fan it would still be Lambert to go for me. Andy Carroll = 1 goal??? He can't go to Brazil with 1 goal???
Yep, I've been critical of Lambert's form but he's playing really well at the moment. Long may it continue!
