I agree....I think Gaston is a sweetie. He had to settle in to a completely different league and had injuries (including one very nasty one). I am surprised he didn't make much of an impact (hopefully that may change) but don't think he was ever trouble.
I don't think star players all have some homogenous 'holier than thou' mindset, they all have their own motivations and preferences which means it comes down to the individual. We could buy a 1m pound player who comes in and demands special treatment or buy a 40m pound player happy to work with/for the team. Every player that would consider a move to us would pretty much know what he's getting and what to expect once he arrives. Osvaldo is the obvious exception but i think it was a case off Mauricio convincing him, and himself that he could make it work. Look at Big Vic he's our 2nd biggest signing and from everything i've seen he's one of the quietest, nicest guys around and Ramirez is rather hot and cold form wise but i don't think I've ever heard or personality clashes to be honest.
Exactly, don't think there were any such issues with Gaston. More his adapting to the PL and change of managers and style didn't help him. Hope he puts in a shift today.
I mean the fact that he came here because he was offered "lots of money" and, if he'd lived up to his potential, would have been off by the Summer. Playing with a player who is looking to leave can disrupt team spirit, which is why Saints played better in League One when Chamberlain got injured.
I think he mentioned he was getting loads of money in one interview...we could hardly expect him to come for love of the club could we?
Before his deal was announced he told a South American news agency that Saints were trebling his wage roughly (£9k per week in Italy) and that the money would make a huge difference to his family back in Uruguay.
We'll just have to disagree I think, or I am missing what you are saying. Certainly can't think when Ramirez has caused any disruption to team spirit.
His personality's fine, I just think that his initial intentions to come here was to use us as a stepping stone until a bigger club came along, and not planning on being here long term will separate him from Lambert, Lallana, etc.
show me some evidence that that happened. He said he tripled his wage.. so what? I have never seen the slightest indication that he doesn't get on great with all the boys.
Can't have another thread Gaston'd Interesting comments from Pochettino in his program notes. Talking about beginning to turn his attention to the summer and next season. Watching under 21 games to see who can progress into the 1st team. Certainly not comments of a man wanting out.
By separate I don't mean not get on, I mean that Lallana and Lambert have been here a while and plan on retiring here. Gaston's got potential to be in the CL and I don't think he's planning to wait 5-10 years with us to play there.
The money quote is annoyingly used completely out of context to the interview it comes from by Liverpool/Spurs/other fans to indicate he's a mercenary. In context it sounds nothing of the sort.
Luke Shaw: "They have got to get the manager down on a long-term contract, which will probably be the first thing they try and do."
