Any idea when the lads return to start preparing for next season? Interesting to see how we hit the ground running after last pre season and all the apparent occurances that ruined players fitness.

about 3 weeks i should think. i was disappointed with several players when last season started, it was clear that people like lambert had completely let himself go over the summer and got really unfit. not good. he especially should be more professional, considering this will be his first opportunity to prove himself at this level. i expect a lot of the players will be really looking forward to getting back and playing the bigger clubs.

This goes pretty much against everything that's come out about last pre-season to be honest. Cortese is down as having said he actually felt sorry for Lambert, as he'd worked very hard in close-season to keep fit at one of his season ticket dinners. It was down to Pardew's regime (as backed up by Connolly) that several of the injuries occcured, including Lambert, which is why he didn't exactly hit the ground running.

Lambert said himself that he was struggling with an injury for about a third of the season.

Well with a physio now in charge of the first team, you'd like to think pre-season would be effective & injury-free!

Probably not too much of that these days. The modern thinking is more of less, i.e. You run short distances during a match so do lots and lots of shorter runs in training. I expect they'll be doing lots of 50m and 100m sprints in July with some conditioning work.

The problem can be keeping it interesting..players hate getting fit again. Don't we all? My body has taken 60 years to get in it's present majestic state, so don't want to ruin it now! Perhaps Pardew and his assistants tried too hard to keep the squad interested.

All joking aside I have to say that I feel the pre-season last time round caused the majority of our early poor beginning. Lambert, Lallana and Barnard were all damaged during the spell over in Switzerland. Frazer Richardson lost more than most by being injured and out for nigh on three months and was always playing catch-up with Butterfield. I doubt whether we would have even signed Butters without the injury.

As has been said by the players they quickly realised that the change of management meant thaty there would be less risk taking and more pro-active medical examination of players fitness etc. I firmly believe we will see less of the injuries caused by fitness frailties as against genuine football accidental ones such as those caused by tackles.

I know one of the lads in the U18's, they go back to training on the 4th of July, they're all back from their holidays (The Youthies) and are bored, missing playing football! Good that they're hungry for it - Hopefully a few of them can push through into the first team this year if they get a good pre-season with the 1st teamers under their belts. A few of them but not all of them are going to away on the tour - like Chambo did last year, unfortunately for my boy he's not but he is a good kid with a very bright future! - and that's actually not being bias at all, he's a talented lad and will be a top player one day.

Think it's fair to say ALL of the players should come through pre-season without any unforced injuries with Nige in charge, and hopefully some will come back even fitter than they were last season too, i.e Deano!

Hello, Waigo..good name. Youngsters are always more eager than the older players, but they usually want to play not train. Hope the lad you know does well.

Cheers Fran :) Yeah I know but they should all still be buzzing from winning promotion to be honest! What better insentive to get fit, train hard and play well than knowing you're starting a new season a league higher than last and you've physically won the right to be there! I'm sure he will, he's very focussed and like I said bags of talent.

thats rubbish. a friend of mine went to one of the season ticket dinners and said that cortese said that the players coming back unfit was one of the reasons that pardew was sacked. he said it was "indicative of the manager and management team and they simply had to go".

    looks like I was right.....

I'm guessing you're not an athlete and havn't played much football....

In football you don't run short distances, unless you're playing hampshire league level and below. There is constant movement in football and players will run between 8 and 12k in a game, in some cases more than this. To get the fitness to do this you have to do long distance training to impove aerobic capacity. They will be doing sprints, but they will be more over 20 and 40 meters to improve acceleration.

This will be combined with heavy gym sets, pool work and other fitness methods.

It is unlikely that they will touch a football for the first 2 weeks.

I knew there was a reason why I didn't become a footballer. I sit down in a chair a lot to get in practice for lying on the sofa.

Okay, Ill take the word of your friend over several people saying the same thing. Also against basically everything else that's been said from the players themselves.

Plus, Lambert keeping fit on his own has nothing to do with Pardew's involvement does it.
