Connor Wickham has had his loan spell at Leeds cut short as Gus Poyet believes he could provide the 'bang' to fire Sunderland to safety.

With Fabio Borini ineligible for the trip to Liverpool and Jozy Altidore looking about as useful as a red light on Grand Theft Auto, Wickham is in line for a chance to impress. Poyet explained:

We need something to happen and I need to find that season-changing moment. I have to find that. It could be Connor Wickham because there is a big possibility he will start.

I'm not going to judge him in this game if he plays. I'm not mad enough to say 'You played against Liverpool and didn't score, so I'm not going to play you anymore.' It's about searching for a solution.

He's going to get a great chance now. I would like Connor to look at this as though we have just signed him for the first time.

He is a new player, nobody knows him and he is a young English striker with incredible power. He's coming to a club to help us to get away from relegation. If he has that impact, that will be fantastic. That will be the 'bang' we need.
Read what you want into it really. To me, rather than a big show of faith in Wickham, it reads more like the very end of Poyet's patience with Altidore.

Either way, go make yourself a legend, Connor lad!

Its no good just replacing like with like, it wont work, all the same problems will re-appear, a fresh approach is needed.

Is this the same Connor Wickham that has a diabolical first touch?

    Yep.

But he's been in the lower leagues man and they've turned him into a superstar, nowt to do with the fact no manager at SAFC rated him beforehand.

Had a chance to Play Giacc in on goal there, a full Italian international, but he can't be trusted can he, not in Connors eyes, who also had a second option, Connor would much rather hang to the ball and shoot from outside the box.

Don't like his attitude, he's all about himself, we won't get that many opportunities to play someone in on goal against these lot. Greed.

    Full comparison this season:

Wickham: (Season overall - all clubs/U21)

Games Started: 21 (10 as sub)
    Shots: 90
    Goals: 10
    Assists: 2

    PL Only:

    Started: 2 (5 Sub appearances)
    Shots: 6 (2 on Target)

    Altidore:

    Games Started: 38 (11 Sub)
    Shots: 74
    Goals: 10 (8 for America)
    Assists: 7 5 for SAFC

    SAFC PL only:
    Started: 19 (8 Sub)
    Shots: 27 (12 on target)
    Goals: 1
    Assists: 1

I'd rather have Connor up front - at least we'd have a player WILLING to take a shot if the chance arises instead of one looking to pick a pass whether it's there or not! IF YOU DON'T SHOOT, YOU DON'T SCORE

Oh - for the record - he had 8 shots on target in 28 games for Hull - 30 shots in total.

Not great reading when we need someone to score us goals

And Borinig has played 23 and had 37 shots. Honestly Altidore is a player who simply won't shoot from what i've seen recently. A striker who is scared to shoot has no use to a team in our position

The lad was shocking last night, I thought at least professional footballers would at least be able to trap a ball, pass a ball, jump and win an occasional header (for the size & build of the lad) but no, no, no and no. Got to be sold in the summer unless the unthinkable should happen.

You don't get many chances against these sort of teams, there's no excuse for not releasing the ball to play your team mate in on goal. Unless of course you want all the glory. He looked up, he saw Giacc, no excuse.

A forward, by very definition, should be greedy and want to score. He nearly scored - if not for a good save. OK so it took a deflection but, at the other end, the same thing ended in a goal (and Suarez was better placed when Sturridge scored) - difference is, it went their way and not ours. I don;t think we'll ever agree on this - I think Altidore, full of confidence, would not have passed the ball in the same situation. In his present state of mind, I think he would look to find someone to pass to if he was a yard out with no-one between him and the goal line. Wickham thinks like a goalscorer - Altidore doesn;t IMO.

Altidore is starting to piss me off with not shooting like but at this moment in time we got no one better. plus if you think shooting from stupid places is thinking like a goalscorer then you are stupid sorry.

Wickham will never be a goalscorer.

Not when he doesn't have a shot on and he has a chance to play a team mate through on goal, that's just detrimental to the team. In his last two game for us he could quite easily have had two assists to his name. Instead he has **** all.
