Arsene Wenger, 64, and Martin Gooner4ever, 53 announced their split on his not606.com forum in a post titled Conscious Uncoupling.

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," the couple wrote.

The pair, who fell in love in 1996 have not had any trophies for the last 8 years.

A spokeswoman for the forum confirmed the split, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Martin was quoted as saying "We are... and always will be a 4th place team, and in many ways we are no closer than we have ever been to the title”

The couple said they had "come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate".

The couple said they had been "working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us".

The couple said "We are a team first till February and fourth maybe at the end of the season, and until after the Man City game we ask for our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time, as we in visage being beaten by 4 or more goals"

"We have always conducted our transfer relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and drop to fourth, we will be able to continue in the same manner."

There have always been constant rumours of others in their transfer relationship, but nothing materialised.

with apologies to Gwyneth and Chris.

why has it all gone wrong ? AW abject failure to buy a ****ing quality striker even though every ****ing sports writer, commentator, posters on this forum; everyone on this planet, knew this is exactly what we needed to do. he failed in the summer which was bad enough, but to not actually buy a striker in January window is inexcusable. he has cost us a chance at the title [we were leading before end of transfer window] and **** knows when we will be able to challenge again.

i loved AW [in a football manager sense] and loved what he has done in the past, but my love for him has gone and it is time we separated.

You mean that logic and clarity of vision have outweighed previous attachment based on emotion..

"the uncoupling terminology hints at an attempt to suggest that rather than being a wholly bad thing, this could actually be another step in life's surprising journey".
