I have been watching United since 1963, long before most of you boys were born but this ( tonight ) has to be the worst team I have ever seen represent United. We were pathetic PATHETIC !!!!! Rooney is the only player that would get in the present City team, Chelsea team, or even the lame Arsenal team. I don't like being beaten at Old Trafford but have seen it many times over the years, however most of the United teams in the past. that have been beaten at Old Trafford ( with a few exceptions ) have put up a fight. Tonight I see the likes of Mata and Felani etc who are not fit to wear the Man Utd shirt !!! We are totally lost at the moment and Moyes is not the answer. City could now go on and dominate us for the next 10 or 20 years, we have fallen that far behind ! Fergie has to take some blame, the Glazers have a lot to answer for and I am so angry as a life long United supporter, Sorry to blow off like this but I've probably had to much to drink, and am used to too much success in the past 25 years but the likes of Bryan Robson, Pat Crerand, Nobby Stiles, Roy Keane etc would have been kicking some arses tonight and yet we just do not have that kind of player any more.

    Mata's world-class, give him time.

The 04/05 team were a worse team than the current one.

Matthew the OP has watched Utd under 8 managers and has a memory that goes a bit further back than 04/05.

If Mata was anywhere near world class, then there is no way Maurene would have sold him . I can assure you that United have had far worse teams than 04/05 , since I have been watching them but you are missing the point, none of them would have capitulated like we did tonight. I have seen us lose many times home and away but what hurts most is that there was NO Mancunian fight in that team tonight and I say that as a born and bred MANCUNIAN ! We are ****e at the moment and it hurts that this basically is the same team that won the title by 11 points last year.

Is it right to blame the glaziers? They gave Moyes the money for fellaini (<doh>) and mata. £64 million is a lot of money. Surely that's down to the manager. Both signings reeked of panic and neither seemed to be what the team needed at that time . In fact fellaini shouldn't be anywhere near a united shirt but still think mata is a good player.

If Moyes is there at the end of season and they give him £100 million plus then that will be the crucial time for club and manager. With no European football making the wrong signings, again , could put you back years.

Within two years we'd improved sufficiently to go on and win the league three years three years on the bounce.

Can you see that happening this with this team?

    With a good manager yes.

Great modern managers need months to rebuild teams - or at least get them heading there - not years.

That's why Moyes could be the wrong appointment, for the wrong era. it is not 1986

Moyes very definitely IS the wrong appointment.

New manager at the start of next season and we could challenge for the title the following one, yes.

The point is can this team (with manager) and the answer to that is definitely not.

    De Gea - £16m
    Rio - £30m
    Evra - £6m
    Jones - £16m
    Carrick - £12m
    Rooney - £30m
    Fellani - £27m
    Mata - £37m

Anyone else I missed out on?

    Such a expensive team!

We usually field 11, although that has been hard to believe at times this season.

No but you are including players that have been with us 8 -12 years so the list is pretty much irrelevant.

That was their value then not now. I fail to see how Ferdinands value 12 years ago is relevant at all ? He's more than justified that transfer fee over his time with the club, as has Carrick, Evra and Rooney.

Apart from De Gea I don't think any of the others will justify their price tags though (Jones, Fellani or Mata)
