Firstly It's not from Wiki is it? I gave you a link to the report where ALL the information came from. How can it be classed a part of that religion if it predates it? Islam and other Christian sects may have adopted it, as those are among the few who do practice it then any religion which did invent it has long vanished from history. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/femalecircumcision/femalecirc_1.shtml#h2
Are you saying there was no religion before Islam, Christ? Just because the www whatever publishes an article you believe it. Dig deeper young man. you will find it is a religious act.
No need, i've already shown that it's not and it would be a wholly futile exercise for me to continue to enforce a point that's already been made.
Because you cannot see what is clearly in front of you. You epitomise the culture of today, my mind is made up you are wrong.
FMG, honour killings and all the rest of it are cultural foibles that pre-date Islam alright, but it’s hardly coincidence that where it exists today it’s largely in Islamic societies or cultures. Religion, anyway, is just a product of human culture (albeit basted in supernatural nonsense). It’s a particular feature of the Islam currently dominant that provides the cultural imperatives to perpetuate the sort of objectification of women that allows FMG to continue. There might be nothing in Islam that specifically requires FMG etc but there’s nothing in the mindset of the culture and society that produced it that has changed it.
If Islam (and other religions which practice FGM) were abolished overnight, would FGM vanish too? It would'nt is the point I was making, no more than honour killings or suicide bombings would stop.
The fact that a practice predates religion does not per se mean that it isn't a practice.FGM is an Islamic practice because the old carpet pilots think that it stops their parties from getting a right royal seeing to from the infidels.
I'm pretty sure FGM along with a lot of other sexually repressive religious practises e.g. no sex before marriage etc. originate from deepseated male insecurity when it comes to female sexuality. An in built feature that almost certainly predates religion and will certainly outlive any religion
You've managed to contradict yourself a couple of posts later In some communities the controversial practice is a female rite of passage and remains an important religious and cultural tradition. 'Little or nothing to do with religion'? You've tried to worm your way out by claiming its origins aren't islamic
I've not contradicted myself at all, I was replying to ST's comment that religion should be banned. I'm saying that would be futile as FGM mutilation in the vast majority of cases is carried out for social acceptability and as a rite of passage, not for religious reasons. Ergo the practice would still exist even if the religion did not. And...it's origins are NOT Islamic.
"In regions where a new religion has become dominant, the tradition of genital cutting does not necessarily die out."
They don`t actually cut off the clitoris as we all know that it is a myth made up by lesbo`s and feminists to make men look stupid.
