It wasn't the marketing. It was more to do with the First Division clubs breaking away from the Football League and striking a deal with Sky in 1992. This meant they could afford the best players in the world. Italy's prominence reduced because they continued striking TV deals with individual clubs.
So it was just a coincidence that when the re branding of the first division happened, thats when the world started to take notice? Why did they change the name if the first division was just as marketable? Surely our history would be lost and all those who won it under its previous name would be meaningless? If re branding the league can help then why would the same not apply to our club?
Sky wanted to use football to encourage people to subscribe. The first division belonged to the Football League.
They changed the name because it was a whole new entity and set up. You seem to be trying to say that the new name brought in the rest, when it was the other way around.
Because the clubs in division one were part of the football league and the money was spread out among the 92 clubs.
So sky separated the first division from the football league and changed its name to the PREMIER league. They then marketed it and made it into what it is today. Arguably the biggest league in the world. Isn't our owner trying something similar. Changing our name to separate us from the lower/middle teams in the division in the hope he can get a better share of the money available.
People keep telling me that Football is different to normal Business. Well this was football and the re branding worked a treat.
It would appear that the pro name change people think that a lot can be achieved by a change of name. If that was true I would think there would be a lot more of this name changing going on.
I think people are over estimating the power of ctwd. The fa in my opinion made up there own minds .. They didn't say no because of CTWD. They listened to what AA said. They will have listened to CTWD and others . In the end the fa said no because they thought it a **** idea.. Those blaming CTWD including AA are deluded. I'm not in CTWD before anyone says I'm biased.
The Premier League was way more than a rebrand. By your argument, they could just change the name every year and watch the cash roll in.
That is what is so concerning. I don't think the club having a comedy name would give us more money. It would be more likely to reduce the money we receive.
As somebody who has spent a considerable amount of time in the Far East, every year for the past thirty years, I can tell you that the heritage and history aspect is the reason they hold English football above any other.
You seem to equate rebranding purely with changing a name. The Premier League received a lot more money from Sky not because of the "change of name" but because they knew that the money would be spent solely on the players for the top teams and they would be broadcasting their games.
Thats not my argument. I am suggesting that the name change helped. If you keep changing the name every year you have no brand at all. Sky have done the same with Darts to some extent. Have you seen the crowds they get now? The money in their sport has increased ten fold.
