    Pretty straight forward really.

Do we play the squad players in the league and play our best team in the champions league hopefully by some miracle winning it, or do we play our best players regularly to keep them on their toes and up to speed.

    Which would you do?

So just play the kids and non regulars in the league then?

I reckon playing a strong side in the league to build up some momentum would be our best option. Rotate the squad though and keep players fresh. Never risk a player with a knock in the league of course.

I think we still play the first 11 for most games but if it's a weekend before a CL game on a Tue or a Wed, then we should play the reserves. We aren't gonna get 4th, so we might aswell focus on Europe

It wouldn't mean any less, but we wouldn't be claiming we're a great side for winning it. To be considered a great side you have to win both your domestic title and the CL, something we have done twice, in recent years. The dippers and the Chavs have never done this

  8. Your players would become rusty (or should that be rustier?)

Let Ferguson and Giggs run the show and keep Moyes on as a puppet and sack him at the end of the season. Then you have an outside chance of CL. Mata being cup tied helps

We did it in '76-'77 and '83-'84 seasons, actually. <ok>

I think you meant to add 'recently', or in 'recent times' or 'this century' to the last sentence, perhaps? :bandit:

No I didn't mean to add anything, if you read my post correctly I referred to the Champions League, not the old European cup, a tournament that was far easier to win, as only 1 team from each country was allowed to enter, meaning there was far less strength in depth

  13. In which case, Man Utd haven't done it twice!

99 and 08 we won both the CL and PL in the same season. Please don't even compare the modern CL to the old Euro Cup, as it is a far tougher competition to win nowadays. For instance under the old rules, the most impressive side in Europe this season, and the team that contains the Ballon Dor winner Real Madrid, would not have been allowed to compete for not winning there domestic title last year

    Ah, that old chestnut again.

Under the old rules Utd wouldn't have won the treble because they never won the league in the qualifying season.<whistle>

Exactly that's why the old rules were dumb, and the old Euro Cup should never be held in as high regard as the Champions League as the old competition was far easier to win. As you have just pointed out yourself, the best side in Europe in 1999 would not have been allowed to compete under the old rules

A competition were only champions competed against other champions was only dumb because Utd couldn't have won the treble,

    That's what you mean.<ok>

How can a competition be easy to win if you have to win another competition to qualify?

It was so easy to win you won it only once, correct?

I think he meant Champions League, you know, the one where you have to play a mini league before the knockout stages.

  19. The old competition was a lot lot harder to win because you HAD to win your domestic league to be in it!

It is a tournament that contains the league champions from the previous year, and fair few others. That is a lot harder than a tournament that just contains the league champions, as has been proven. As plenty of teams haven't won there domestic title and gone on to be the best side in Europe the following year
