My point is simple. If a manager truly believes deep down that a big spending spree is not automatically likely to improve a team significantly.... then, this same manager shouldn't automatically think of that club as favourites. OR the corollary: If a manager believes that the tactical and motivational work he has done, both at the team and individual level, is superior to that of the manager who just welcomed a bunch of top players - then, he shouldn't automatically think of the latter as favourites.
Can't argue with either of those but neither of them fir with what Brod said PS...just in case you've missed it, I'm taking the piss
By way of taking the piss... remember that infamous 'chihuahuas' comment... it made me WANT to believe that he was totally taking the piss with the interviewer there. But was he at the time? Or did he see us as total underdogs? I think LFC's ascent this season, due in great part to his formidable work, has taken Brendan by surprise and his own confidence has been growing exponentially similarly to that of the fans. So, I think his recent comments reflect a different point of view, supported by an expanding confidence.
I think he was just playing down our odds to relieve some pressure if he could. The media would call it "mind games".
I think you are over thinking it. BR's reflecting on the current season imo. A look at the league table says he's right, at present. There's also a hidden barb in there re. utd if you look for it
"mind games" doesn't do it justice imo. I prefer to think he was doing more than that, like "totally taking the piss out of them"...
I think it's the opposite. He's saying look where we are [without spending a billion]. I hope it won't come back to bite him.
Yes, exactly. So we are over achieving! I also think its telling the fans, media, pundits, etc, not to expect a big outlay come the summer. however, that could be transfer tactics to try and get transfer fees lower.
Better than doing a Moyes and letting the world know just how much you have at your disposal. Bluenoses always said they'd like to see what Moyes could achieve given a bigger budget. The world is watching and waiting!
You only have to look at spuds and AVB to see what BR meant. Having the right manager to bring a 'team' together is far more important than spending £100 million on a team of so called top players who play like strangers and have a manager who can't get them playing together. Last time they played only one of the many AVB signed was playing. Mancini also failed to come to terms with this last season, virtually handing united the title. And many Chelsea managers have also failed in that respect. What Rodgers has done this season has taken us all by surprise I feel and the question he now faces is that if we were to win the league, would bringing in top players upset the team ethic? It's obvious there are areas that need more quality , the biggest one being the bench. However, any players he brings in have to fit into his work and team ethic.
Why are you all thinking like a bunch of morons? Money does not and never has made a team - no matter if you do have unlimited funds. It will however help you to acquire the technical skills that you believe that you need. Match that financial investment with good managerial skills and then you are well on your way to being successful. It's the blend of the 2 that makes good clubs even better. Failure on either side of the equation will ensure that success is not achieved. When people start telling you that There Is No Alternative then you know that they don't know what they are talking about. It's not the level of spend that will define our success. It's not even the retention of BR. It is however how he and his team employs the resources that he has in the best way and then improves the quality of those resources over the Summer. BTW the chihuahua reference worked brilliantly - it appeared to define our chances of even being in the fight for the title without even making one direct statement.
You'll be hard pressed to find anyone disagreeing with your obvious statement. The question dwells in the grey area. E.g.: All things being the same... Do you believe that if a club net-spends 120M on top players in the summer while you spend 50M... does the big-spending club become automatically more favourite than you, in your eyes?
To support your argument Dave: Whilst our spending has not been on the 'Chelsea/Man City' level, we have been guilty of spending a lot of money throughout the years with limited success. In contrast with Bayern Munich and Barcelona who have spent quite a bit of money, but they have good structures in place to maximise their resources.
both of you are right. dave is very correct in all he said. but livtor is also right to say all things being equal....
