Sunderland are understood to be one of several Premier League clubs tracking Gus Poyet's son, Diego, who is currently at Charlton. The 18-year-old, who was born in Spain during his dad's spell at Real Zaragoza, is due to run out of contract at The Valley in the summer and a move to a top-flight team appears to be on the cards. A host of scouts watched Poyet during the Addicks' 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday, with Charlton's hopes of persuading him to sign a new deal dwindling. Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham are believed to be amongst the clubs keeping tabs on the teenager, who will earn Charlton a compensation fee should he move on this year. New Addicks boss Jose Riga stated: "The contract is our business, but be sure we have our eyes very open about it. Diego is still young but the maturity in his game is right. "In this environment he will always receive good advice and he is happy at the moment. He can be a very good player." Even with the family connections, Sunderland may miss out on Poyet if they are relegated this season, with the draw of the Premier League likely to be the key factor. If we stay up I fancy us to beat off Fulham and West Ham - but Barcelona have been mooted as well! Never seen the lad play so can;t comment but, if he lives up to his press (and it's not just Agents pushing a player coming to the end of a deal) then great get him signed on
He certainly seems to be in demand, but like marcus, I have not seen enough of him to make an objective assessment of his abilities..
Yep "I’ve seen the rumour about Diego, my son. “But why would I want to sign my son? He’s at Charlton, just made his debut, he’s only 18. It’s going really well for him there.”
Well if he's off in the summer I'd like to think we'd be in the driving seat, with Gus being his dad and all
23rd of January mate. I'm always sceptical of sites like Clubcall, who have a track record of producing bad and inaccurate articles using poor sources like the Daily Star frequently. When the main papers ran with this a week ago why didn't they include us in the teams linked? It would be lazy to assume we're interested in him just because of the family connection and low and behold it's the laziest of sports journalists running with it(I notice nobody is credited to the article and opens with 'understood'). They might be bang on with this and he could join us in the summer. But you can understand why I'm sceptical giving it's from ClubCall, the same company who bought us premium transfer phone lines on the old Teletext pages charging a ridiculous amount of money to listen to them waffling idol hear say. Just sceptical of the source mate that's all. I am a Journo hater after all
Aye, there`s a lot of laziness, guesswork & conjecture out there. Not a lot of genuine research. `it is understood` covers a multitude of sins. Headline grabbing rather than fact seems to be the order of the day.
Aye mate, that aside though, sounds like a great prospect. I'd have him for our academy. Or even loan him back to Charlton.
The clubs that have been linked are staggering, so will be a major coup if we get him, even given the family connection. Looks like one that potentially could be sold for an incredible profit, although even out of contract, we'll have to pay for the lad due to his age, I think.
If we were to get him it would be a staggering commitment to us from Gus. But for it to happen, we must stay up x
No more academy prospects please. Can we have some ready made off-the-shelf QUALITY hit-the-ground-running players, for ****s sake!!!!!
Certainly seems to be attracting a hell of a lot of interest. Of course it could be just the journos at it again.
Personally i'd like both, They're two different departments on two different budgets. It would be insane to stop planing for the future. Pointless in fact as the two are unrelated. We've got a multimillion pound top rated academy with staff being paid and teams entered in competitions why stop doing all that just because the first team squad is ****? When the likes of Watmore and Ba break the first team will you be so dismissive then? What about Colback, Hendo, Waggs and Leadbitter? They brought in much needed money and some made an impact on the first team too. I'm going to view them separately myself and I expect significant investment in the first team as well as continued investment in the development squad, otherwise I think we'd be cutting off our nose to spite our face.
Watch him against Sheff Utd & he wasn't that good. well he was at passing the ball back all the time tho.
