I don't think you can though. For example, I've said in the past on your board, Carragher was quality for Liverpool as he had a strong association with the Club, the City and the people. I very much doubt Carragher would have made the bench if he was at United or Chelsea as they wouldn't have been able to get out of him what Liverpool could. That's not saying he wasn't good but rather that LFC got him to a level that no other club could because of those feelings towards the club. I don't think you can ever discount how a player feels for a club emotionally when you are considering how good they are.
I'm an ABC and think Carvalho was miles ahead of Ferdinand. Kompany arguably the best in the PL era- with someone as competent as Carvalho alongside him City would have the league sewn up by now.
carvalho wouldnt of got into the United side at any point in the past 20 years ahead of the players we had. I am referring to our full strength starting line ups not squad. Anyone can get in our squad.
Absolutely arguably. He's current flavour of the month to my mind and while very good no doubt isn't anywhere near the best. On Ferdinand, he's no where near as bad or as overrated as some are making out but at the same time the best 'footballing' centre half we've had in the PL era was Gary Pallister. Best of them all though was Jaap Stam, who was an immense defender. Vidic is bafflingly over rated as a defender. He's good don't get me wrong but he's never been on the same planet as Stam.
Staam was something else, so mobile for such a huge **** too. Fergie replaced him with Blanc, one of the reasons there were no followup CLs soon after Kompany on his day is definitely the best pl defener right now but he's prone to stupid decisions.
Staam was immense, and Blanc he ran like he was in treacle, absolute mince by the time he reached OT. CB's are often ****e footballers, I mean look at Carragher ffs, Bould and Adams also fit the same bill, as did Dave Watson for us. Absolutely terrible footballers, but fantastic defenders, as they'd throw themselves in front of anything and everything that came towards their goal.
Yeah last ditch tackle guys. No pretty stuff Ferdy is more likely to get out of his face than let a ball hit it
He was far better than Vidic mate, better than Rio too. Sorry. He was that good when the chavs got him in those first 2 or 3 seasons.
You have to remember the system that Terry and Carvalho played in, with Makalele camped infront of them barely venturing into the opponents half. Your fullbacks where also very defensive minded, even playing a centre half (Gallas) at full back. Rio and Vidic had to play in a more attacking 442 system with a lot less cover, as our tactics weren't to try and stifle the opposition and win 1-0 or 2-0 every game. We always tried to score as many as we could and put on a good show for the supporters, which would leave us more voulnerable to concede
Sorry UIR but you're a blind then, Carvalho literally had everything and had no real weakness, the guy was pure class and Rio wasn't even on the same level as him. Stop being bitter about that cracker Riccy scored against ya
Are people still arguing that Rio is the best of his generation after the list earlier including Cannavaro, Nesta, Vidic and Maldini? Give me strength. Rio was quality but he will never, ever be considered on the same level as Maldini. Insane bias.
I don't agree. In his prime, Jaap Stam was far better than ever Ferdinand was and also better than Vidic (who runs him a good second.) When Stam was with Untd, he was voted the best defender in the Champions League (twice) and was a principal reason win that title, as well as 3 Premier League titles! His rapid departure to Lazio was one of the few mistakes in the career of SAF, which he later acknowledged.
I didnt rate carvaliho much, bit of a prat and prone to far more lapses than Rio ever was. he also played in an ultra defensive side so the risks were greatly reduced. Rio ( and vidic ) and ever other United CB pairing have played in attacking side, where on a number of occasions they are the only players back. Carvalho and Terry would have been annihilated in the United squad as they lacked the qualities needed to be a United defender. This is also the first time I have ever heard anyone rate Carvalho. Literally the first time ever. The guy was a clown and a major liability at times. You should thank your lucky stars for Makalele tbh, saved your CB's a lot of hassle.
