http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spor...rendan-rodgers-money-doesnt-guarantee-6848633 The Reds boss says coaching and man-management can make up for financial gap BRENDAN RODGERS believes Liverpool's success this season proves money isn't everything in the battle for Premier League glory. The Reds' transfer spending has been dwarfed by title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea but they find themselves flying high in second place on the back of five successive wins. With just nine matches of the season to go, Rodgers' men are four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand. âClubs spend a billion quid and it does not guarantee anything. We will be in the market for good and top players, but there is more to it than that,â Rodgers said. âOnce you put your ideas in place and once the players start to crack it, then we will have success. Money canât buy that. âIt is about coaching and man-management and dealing with people. Having a great staff. Finding a cause for the players to fight for. All of that comes into it and that is something we have done in the period I have been here. âThe players believe in it and the work has got them the rewards. You know when youâre employed by Liverpool it is not to sit in seventh. âYou have to be up there and try to be the best. Iâm not surprised by it. Itâs a bit earlier that what I thought, maybe a year earlier, but I am not surprised. âThe money is great and we will be in the market to compete, but what is important is still having a vision of how you want the club to progress.â
Well said I've always enjoyed listening to Rodgers. I know some people cringed at first but I thought he handled the media brilliantly, especially considering how much media attention there (twitter etc).
I was thinking the same, we're kinda in the middle with good funds and the thinking of Rodgers. It would be great if we won it over the money clubs.
I'd much rather win it through hard work and building than having a rich owner. I know some will think I'm just saying that because that's the situation we're in but its genuinely not why I say it. I never wanted a mega rich owner to come in and spend silly money.
I agree, it takes something off the sucess it will be so much sweeter to finish above Chelsea and City.
A rich, sugar daddy owner splashing the cash isn't viable long term, it's walking a tight rope for a club... what if the owner(s) lose interest suddenly, decide to stop investing, come into financial difficulties, the club is left with massive wage bills and other big drains on the financial resources, stadium costs etc. Sponsorship might cover some of this but that kind of structure demands a cash rich owner ploughing funds into the project. What has been implemented by FSG and Rodgers is sustainable, intelligent and has the potential to keep evolving (we all hope!).
I was in the minority that enjoyed it lol. But yeah, the stick I got from my mates (who support other clubs) was a bit much! But I wouldn't be surprised if others clubs start doing this
The only problem I can think of with the model we're adopting is that the richer clubs will start picking us off. Dortmund are an incredible example of building a successful team with limited resources, youth and giving an opportunity to a young and talented manager. Unfortunately, they're being picked off by Bayern with their mega millions, and now they don't look as strong.
Would be great to see City and Chelsea's 100's of millions getting one shiny League Cup and for us to run off with the title and Arsenal the FA Cup
I don't see us being picked off tbh, Jimmy. We're much more powerful than Dortmund, esp in commercial revenues and potentially so in media revenues. Plus, we won't sell to a PL rival unless it is for a humongous premium on top of a player's market value. We're not a little horse or dog in the money race either, regardless of what Brendan says to enoble our race against Chelsea and City. After a few years in the CL, we'll overtake them both. Hopefully, FFP clogs at least some of the pie hole of City, PSG, Chelsea as they think twice about getting on gobbling sprees. Chelsea will for sure get a striker next year, while City a defender - they will probably spend a similar sum to us in the summer.
I've always said if we got a sugar-daddy and won things because of it, I would always support my team- but the victories would feel a little hollow through having been bought. Of course we need money to compete, but I believe there are enough legitimate ways to earn money through success on the pitch without mega-bucks from oil or some other dubious, exploitative source. You can get enough money from football to get to the top, and stay there, if coupled with the skills that BR mentioned in the OP. If we got a billionaire owner, I'd accept it because we're still Liverpool, but I really don't want it to happen.
Looking forward to the next installment in your sig tonight/tomorrow Astro. Glad someone's noting things down for posterity/history.
Although City have obviously bought success, I have a bit of tolerance for them because they've assembled a good, fluid, attacking team and I've watched some good stuff from them (not as good as us, though) Chelsea, on the other hand, though effective, are dull as a wet Wednesday in Warrington and I really would hate to watch that every week.
meh. this is simple. 1. everything sounds good when a guy is on the up. people always listen more. If rodgers was in 16th they'd be ridiculing this comment 2. show me one side that's won stuff (not by fluke) in the modern game in the big leagues without a lot of cash... 3. show them the impact on that side if you can find one of other clubs buying up their players I thought... hmmm.. dortmund perhaps but they won nothing much par se but bayern have still robbed them blind. how about ahtletico.. quite a bit of cash there really. 4. he is right that money on its own doesn't guarantee anything but I can promise you if owners give a billion AND then keep thier beaks out of things and let it be spend wisely by an expert then fine... but look at citeh. they took over went out i n24 hours and bought robinho who thought he was going to chavski. then they left hughes to buy lesser players.. then they did othe rmad things... look at chelsea.. they sacked more managers than had hot dinners. in short. if LFC were handed 500million today I think we would have a dmaned good go form here to buy success but we would have to accept 50% goes in the drain... hand everton 500mil and they'd have a harder taks getting guys in.. so again success breeds success. LFc have a modicum of it this year thus far and so if in cl can find the 4/5/6 players far easier.
