babyhornetdan--if Malky had resigned we could have sued him for breach of contract, and got some compensation that way. But that would mean an expensive court case; Malky or his new employers would have had to pay the costs (because he would have lost) but no one really wants the complexity of a court case. In any case, the fact of the matter is that the club almost certainly expected Malky to leave this summer; it was really a question of when , were to, and for how much compensation. Giving him a new contract in Feb was about making sure we got reasonable compensation when he left, not about keeping him here. No one in the universe thought that Malky would be staying for 3 years because he signed a three year contract. It was a signal that the club EXPECTED him to move, not that they were trying to tie him down into NOT moving.
Bump After the last few days (I didn't vote till now) I have to say Bass has exceeded my expectations, especially in light of that Wobby interview/copy of the talksport. I think he was aware enough to grab Dyche before he flew to cardiff and has also sold well in this current transfer window where big money signings haven't happened. Bass, who may not know much about football, has gone to the board when needed, got a good man to take us forward and brought money into the club. We have made one signing, a good talented youngster and hopefully more to come!! So up the orns! And I'm fully in Shaun Dyche's Barmy Army!!!!
If MM had resigned it would not have got to a Court case as even then if a new club wanted to sign him they would have paid compensation or his appointment would not have been approved by the FA Of course no-one expected MM to stay 3 years and no doubt the contract for 3 years was intended to make sure compensation was payable during that time. BUT MM still had 15 months of his old contract to run in March so we could have denied Cardiff (or anyone else) permission to speak to him even then. The amount of compensation was not linked to the contract any more than the £500,000 from Reading for Rodgers was - it was about horse trading. It is clear the club were trying to guage where MM's intentions lay as he had not wanted to speak to Burnley - the club needed stability and were trying to get it and hoped by giving MM a new contract he would realise how valued he was and would settle down for at least a year. MM had no need to agree at that point to tie himself down - by doing so he misled the fans and the club. If you go back through all the postings you will find those who now say "of course we expected him to leave this summer" were saying nothing like that when he signed. The bloke has less honour than Rodgers so good riddance to him and I hope he is sacked before Christmas .
