Aye,when I went to England first I only knew how to read a metric micrometer and a bit of a shock when still using imperial in my first job but clever Irishman used slip gauges to calibrate and could read to a tenth of a thou.
oldie but goldie ps Did you have a good day yesterday?I watched the 2 finals on the telly and the faves never really got worried but good all the same.
I had a great day. Much more civilised these days. I was up in Antrim on Sunday for the Cork game, then watched the cricket in the morning before the parade. I got roped in to carrying **** round for the club. It was like a giant umbrella. ****e weather but the place was still buzzing. Home then in time for Castlebar Vs St Vincent's. I really enjoyed it. I recorded the small ball last night then. Great to see a Carlow team get that far.
No drink yesterday, had a skinful on Sunday with pubs opening till 12.30!A hour walk in the mountains came back watched parade and two matches.Pissed Saturday as well so had enough at that stage.
Changed days. It used to last the week. Over 31k folk were at those matches. Quite something. I've a mate living in Castlebar who reckons the place had gone nuts altogether. St Patrick's day was cancelled in Borris because Mount Leinster were in the final. They were having it today instead. I love that ****.
Guinness pulled out of the world famous New York St Patricks day parade because the organisers wouldn't allow gay marchers to express their sexuality . Green lycra wis banned . The NY mayor refused to take part in the parade as did the mayor of Boston at their parade for the same reason .
It's because it is run by the Ancient order of the Hibernians who are conservative Catholics. Not conservative to the extent that they don't mind people getting drunk into oblivion. Guinness have a little bit of a cheek as in the 90's they made one of their arty adverts and subsequently binned it because it made Guinness look gay. I've spoken to a few AoH guys in the past and on the face of it were really decent guys. But it's hard to reconcile that carry on.
Anybody who feels the need to join an "order" is worth the watching . In saying that why would anybody need to express their sexuality in a St Patricks day parade ?
Totally agree with that. I doubt many people really give a toss about someone's sexual preferences but the idea that you need to have different societies and asscoiations in pretty much every walk of life these days to cater for those of a LGBT persuasion is a tad galling - it's not my idea of equality and it smacks to me of some people just wanting to be noticed for what they are rather than who they are. plus ca change.....
Surely taking part in any parade is about the gayest thing you can do in public, short of actual bumming?

There was a float with LGBT folk on it but it wasn't expressing anything about their sexuality. I know what you are saying and I kind of agree but at the same time there are loads of disparate groups take part in the parade. It wouldn't necessarily be about their sexuality, rather a group of that sexuality getting together to celebrate St Patrick's day. I thought it was funny that they rescinded an invitation to the Police from the North. My attitude then was that it was their parade and they could invite whoever the **** they wanted. I guess the same rules apply here.
