will spain be handing back their north African territories

The plazas de soberanía (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈplaθaz ðe soβeɾaˈni.a], literally "places of sovereignty") are the current Spanish sovereign territories in continental North Africa bordering Morocco. The name refers to the fact that these territories have been a part of Spain since the formation of the modern Spanish State (1492-1556), to distinguish them from territories obtained during the 19th and 20th century

Perhaps they should hand large chunks of Spain proper back to the Muslims who occupied it for hundreds of years up to the end of the 15th century ........and offer homes to the descendants of the Jews they expelled as well.

At what stage does this get silly? Do people with more Neanderthal DNA (we all have a bit, which must be deeply upsetting to racial purists) deserve to own more land because they were here before the invading modern humans from the African Rift Valley?

My small vote would be yes

Reset the game of campaign

Let the people of each country decide if they want independence then that's what it means

Greed is only rust

This opinion comes from a person swamped by blue parents who saw red
and then realised exactly how lucky I was to even have an opinion

Lost too many friends and family to greedy causes dressed as righteous one to ever change my mind

Reset the game

I won't see 2050 ... The new era
But my lads should make it

Spain has recently offered a "right of return" to the descendents of the Jews expelled following the 1492 "reconquista", the same does not apply however to the descendents of the Muslims expelled a few years later.

The Jews in Al-Andalus arrived (in the vast majority) with the Muslim conquest starting in 711 CE. Granada fell in 1492, that's 781 years. It's only 522 years since 1492 to place the significance Al-Andalus into perspective.

Then there's Sicily.

Personally I feel if the "reconquista" had not occured and "Spain" had remained a Muslim country much of today's problems would never have occurred. The present "us" on one shore and "them" on the other would not have occurred and perhaps even the advances in science, technology, medicine and agricuture made by Al-Andalus would have been carried forward without interruption.

Of course we have Bosnia, Albania and Kossovo not to mention Turkey here in Europe as Muslim majority countries but culturally they are the product of a different period and influence. After Baghdad, Cordoba was the largest and most advanced city in the world of the day and one just needs to look at great mosque of Codoba AKA the present cathedral to see the sheer magnificence of that culture.

As for Neanderthals and their DNA, all modern humans came out of Africa, them too.

I've no idea. But if the people there want independence then of course.

Anyway, what's that got to do with the UK owning part of Spain? Or is it just the very limp argument "they're just as bad as us"?

TBH mate, as the person who put the OP up, I like the way this and many threads morph into a subject quite different from when it started. Makes a good read.

Agreed, pretty much sums up what I put in post 33 on this thread! I did not agree with most of his politics but Bob just like Tony Benn were some of the last of sadly a dying breed. Like them or hate them at least you knew what they were about and stood for! Tony and Bob did not need spin doctors or focus groups they did and said exactly what was on there tin.

Most political party's have all wimped out and all pander to the center ground, this is why I can't be bothered to vote any more.

Too defeatist mate. At this point in time things may look bleak, but history repeats itself, one day we will be back arguing about ideals at a meaningful level. Us 53 year old Brits (an exclusive and perfectly formed club, those born in the right place and time to have maximum exposure to the world) may not live to see it, but we may see the shallowness start to grow into a mountain of something more vital. I'm not a Marxist (anymore) but I'm very happy my 18 year old R's supporting son is. A few more like him around and the world starts to get interesting again.
