today's the day... all the bullshit has been spouted and all there's left is the actual game. just how i like it. all the crap spouted by players and managers becomes so much hot air and now we see the real game.

pity its just another match eh lads. just 3 points not a cup final... clam heads and firefilled bellies called for yes but with the aim of getting 3 points nothing else.

We can afford the loss more than united. As long as we match or better spurs result then it's pretty much as you were. Reckon we need 15/16 points out of 30 to get CL. As for the title, well the result of this match will tell us how we stand. Interesting day I think.
Our remaining fixtures away you would expect us to win at least 3 and our home form is excellent.

View from United: 'I'd swap attacks'

Manchester United fan and football writer Jonathan Birchall provides the view from Old Trafford ahead of Sunday's clash, including why he would swap his team's attack for Liverpool's.

There's plenty of talk that Liverpool are the favourites for Sunday's match - is that the sentiment among Manchester United fans?

I don't think I'll ever quite be able to bring myself to say that Liverpool are favourites at Old Trafford but we're certainly as vulnerable going into this fixture as I can remember. In the politest terms, it has been a difficult season for us, and although I probably shouldn't admit it, knowing how well you lot are doing at the other end of the M62 hasn't made things any easier.

How is David Moyes likely to line his side up at Old Trafford? What formation do you expect and who will feature?

I expect Moyes will play his old favourite of 4-4-2, given that it worked in the Capital One Cup against Liverpool (had to get that in there) and against Arsenal at home. I expect we will start with Rooney and Van Persie up front, despite the latter's somewhat underwhelming performances in recent weeks. I'd imagine Fellaini will get another start alongside Carrick, with Mata and Januzaj either side in midfield. Something a bit different to try and quell your midfield three and release Mata would be a nice surprise, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you were filing a scouting report on United for Brendan Rodgers, what would it contain?

Expect crosses and look to run at the centre-backs. Think Torres at Old Trafford in 2009.

Both sides boast incredible attacks, but would you swap United's for Liverpool's?

I would, yes. Sturridge has been absolutely phenomenal this year and I can't really see an argument against him being the best English striker around. I'm pro the wriggly arms dance as well, as it happens. As for Suarez, there's very little you can say that hasn't already. Best player the league has seen since Ronaldo and the one I least like us coming up against since Henry.

Perhaps taking Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez as read, which Reds player has most impressed you this season?

Probably the obvious next choice down, but Jordan Henderson has come out and proven a lot of people wrong. I have a soft spot for Jon Flanagan as well, who I think is a much better defender than people give him credit for.

Which games mean more to you: Manchester City or Liverpool?

Liverpool - without question. City's success in the last few years may have given the derby more sway on the title race but nothing touches United v Liverpool as far as I'm concerned. Plus, my girlfriend is a Kopite, which only serves to add to the needle.

What is your favourite memory from meetings with the Reds down the years?

Cantona at Wembley in 1996 and Ole during the treble season are great memories but for sheer Ferguson-style snideyness, O'Shea in front of the Kop in 2007 after we had played woefully is probably my favourite.

What would be the dream outcome from a United point of view on Sunday?

For Moyes to go and attack one of the big sides and for it to come off. Even our wins against those around us have felt a little wary this season, so a full-on, confident attacking display would be exactly what we're after. If ever there was a game for Mata to properly announce his arrival, albeit belatedly, it's against Liverpool...

    Finally, let's have a prediction...

2-1 United, no fingernails and Welbeck doing the wriggly arms dance after his last-minute winner. It's the hope that kills you.

    MATCH PREVIEW

Is Manchester United's 20-year run in the Champions League about to end? On the basis of this fixture on Sunday lunchtime, Liverpool are the top-four side United will feel they are most likely to catch.
If they win, United would be eight points behind Brendan Rodgers' team with nine games to go - tough but not impossible. If they draw, United would still be 11 adrift. Lose and the gap would stretch to an insurmountable 14 points.

United will find encouragement in their League Cup win over the same opposition back in September, and in the six consecutive defeats they have inflicted on Liverpool at Old Trafford in the last five years.
Of course, United's other route to Europe's top table would be to win the Champions League. Next Wednesday's task of repairing the damage done in their awful display against Olympiakos will be in the back of their minds, but Lisbon in May seems a very long way away.
Bringing in Juan Mata, agreeing Wayne Rooney's new deal and Robin van Persie's apparent willingness to follow suit all suggest that no expense will be spared in supporting Moyes.
There's every reason to think that United will be real contenders again next season, but for now their great rivals have a momentum which United's season has lacked almost from the first week.
Liverpool have not kicked a ball in anger since winning at Southampton a fortnight ago. Playing only once a week has been a major advantage for them, but not playing enough can bring its own difficulties. At least they've had time to work on defending, which still threatens to be their Achilles heel.
Individual errors by experienced central defenders have been all too frequent, but one of their problems has been the loss of the underestimated Lucas in front of that back four; the Brazilian's return to fitness could not have been better timed.
Liverpool have won their last two away, their first consecutive wins on the road all season. If they can make it three then a top-four finish will be the least of their ambitions.

    Manchester United

The Red Devils have kept clean sheets in their previous three league games and in four of their last six.
They have netted 18 times in their 14 home league games this season. Tottenham (16 goals) are the only side in the top half of the table with a lower tally.
Against West Brom, Wayne Rooney became the first player to reach double figures for both goals and assists in five different Premier League seasons. He has now scored or assisted 252 goals in the top flight.
Robin van Persie is set to make his 250th Premier League appearance. He has scored six times in his last seven league starts against Liverpool.

    Liverpool

The Reds are unbeaten in nine league games, winning seven of those matches.
They are chasing a fifth successive league win. The last time they won five in a row was in September, when the fifth match in that sequence (which included the final two games of the 2012-13 season) was a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.
The last time Liverpool recorded five successive victories during a single season was at the end of the 2008-09 campaign.
Liverpool's tally of 73 goals is the most by a team after 28 games of a Premier League season. It is more than the Reds have managed in any other complete Premier League season, bar their 2008-09 campaign, when they netted 77 times.

only player lfc fear is hernandez the square hanger. LFC always seem to let him free in the 6 yard box and he does nothing else.

Utd would be mad to put well back on v lfc when hernandez record speaks for itself.

    anyway.... enough talk... football... now!

MITO's thought for the day! I totally agree with you mate.

It's been very strange around here lately. I've never known it so quite - especially in the run up to a United match! I really hope that is because we got into this one with more confidence and have therefore all followed MITO's advice - its all about 3 points - no more and no less.

Got one of those feelings for this game...really hope we can win, and if we do we'll smash them, but just nervous as ****. Huge game, especially after Chelsea's loss and the Arsenal/Spuds game following.

A win would be the catalyst for something special, in my eyes. I'm nervous yet quitely confident, I'm not nervous out of fear, but out of a grudging respect for Manchester United and what they're capable of. If they win, fair play to them and, I just hope the game isn't settled by something dubious like it has tended to in recent years.

It's almost in our own hands, this situation echoes the 08/09 season when we went to Old Trafford, go on a 100% run and the title could be ours, we fell just short that year (4-4 at home to Arsenal), but a win today and for the first time this season I'll hold my hands up and say we have the ability to win the title.

With that all said, it's a massive test today, in my eyes bigger than the Chelsea and City games away, the pressure, circumstances and the rivalry makes this a huge occasion, for once going in to this game we have something more to play for other than pride. Over to you, Brendan.

scored 73 this season.BR deserves massive credit for this.
