it's all about the quality for me as you can't judge a player simply by the transfer fee. I mean... is AC worth £35m?.... for me, in real terms I'd spend no more than £10m on a player like that (young, unproven etc..).
Transfer this to Cabaye and Ba and in pure value terms Ba is a £10m player and Cabaye probably the same so we have got two good quality players in IMHO.
The only difference is Ashley is a wheeler and dealer and took advantage of two contract 'glitches' to save the club some cash.
As some of the guys above are saying it's a long game this window so the time to weigh everything is at the end of the season... hopefully we'll all be smiling by then!

The transfer window slams shut at midnight tonight and with Best, Barton and Smith (<yikes>) on the way out, I think we're really going to struggle to stay up!

  3. Why does this need to be made any clearer???!

The club can accept any bid for Joey Barton they want!!! It doesn't mean he's going, and he's said he has no ambition to leave Newcastle!

I have a rather tired view of all of this, MA being responsible for all the evils, players play the game and we have lost the generations of players that had a real connection with their local club and cared about it, players were responsible for relegation no one else, they are supposed to be professional, paid incredible sums of money and live a coddled life about time they repaid the bill that we as fans pay.

yeah, but i reckon Footballers live such a privelidged life so removed from the real world that they've never heard the word 'no'. Therefore they cant use it at the opportune time: "we've accepted a bid from ****etown united, so you're going there", "n, nnnnuuh, nnnuuuuuuh, OK"

When they sign it's a love affair, but gotta look after number 1, old age is such a drag if you only have a few million.

This totally. We're not even a week into the transfer window and we've signed 3 players already, rumours of various others in town, as others have said players etc still on holiday, business will pick up in a couple of weeks when they're back. Patience is required.

Well, with my expertise in football management with Newcastle I can tell you that.

In the first week or so you get rid of the deadwood, you then see what you have left (I always look for 2 players per position) and identify targets from there. The benefit of this is that after you have sold everyone you have your complete budget right there, so you won't over spend.

The amount of playings coming and leaving does make this feel almost like being the fans in a football management game.

    This!

Common sense would suggest that the best free transfers would be snapped up ASAP - we've done that. Once they're gone, then Newcastle's movement will be very much determined by the actions of other clubs, i.e. buying replacements, buying players who've been given the cold shoulder e.g. Erdinc or simply waiting to get the best possible deal!

I reckon we'll do more than JUST get free's and players with clauses in their contracts. But with them being cheap, they're the most sought after players. I'm much happier that we're getting them than sitting back and letting others snap them up!

Exactly, these transfers have required negotiations with only the players, making them naturally quicker, and also will have required quick action to beat other clubs to them, or risk having them snatched from under our noses like we did to Liverpool with Marveaux.

Less than a week into the window and have signed four players; Abeid, Ba, Cabaye and Marveaux, sold one - Nolan and released two - Kuqi and Campbell.

Pardew said before the window opened that he wanted to add six or seven decent players to the squad because we were seriously lacking in depth. So even if we count Abeid as a first teamer (i'm not sure that he is) we have only increased the squad size by one but for me have already increased its strength considerably.

I have always assumed that we would recruit some freebies in order to allow us to use our budget to get some special players and it looks like we have now completed the free signings side of our business (Cabaye not a free signing but obtained on the cheap due to triggering a release clause). I am predicting that we will still get another five of six players plus any additional necessary to replace any outgoings. (Erdinc, Zog, Naylor, Barnetta, Gardner, A N Other - would be nice)

The good news is we still have our transfer kitty pretty much intact and we have nearly two months to go. I am really struggling to understand where all the negativity keeps coming from!?

Add to the list Colo, apparently Seville bid £5million but Newcastle want £7million.
What the F... is going on?

The selling of some of our better/influential players.

While it's nice to see players coming into the club, players like Barton, Jonas, Colo are still not guaranteed to be at the club when we face Arsenal, they're around 28/30 y/o and it's seems as though your time here at the club is coming to an end - especially if MA accepts an offer he cannot refuse.

Yeah there is a possibility that they might leave, although I think Jonas and Colo stories are just that - media stories. Enrique is also still a risk and so is any other player that another club might make a serious bid for. But that works both ways and is what makes this a transfer window.

Nolan wanted £50k/week for five years and I think we are right to say no and so he left. We now have two months and our kitty in tact to find a replacement. Barton, Colo, Enrique and Jonas are all also replaceable and we will get compensation for them to add to the funds we already have.

I'm sorry but it does not make sense to be overly negative about the prospect of losing players in a transfer window without keeping an open mind to the prospect of replacing them with better. Players come and go, that is football.

Take into account those 4 players are on something like £250,000 a week between them. Any 4 replacements would be taking much less than that.
