You see, Mike, we can do it this season! We can stay up and then build from there. CP will be fondly remembered, and rightly so, but the club is all important and it needs you and MT Junior to keep up the support. COYR!
Because of the academy and the players that have come through in recent years - plus the catchment area to discovering more kids. He asked his people to find a club in London and Madrid specifically, in hope to get gems let go at an early age from the likes of Arsenal and Real. So he bought us and Alcoron.
club always the most important thing fingers crossed I've been there through lows lowers highs and more lows so will always be there whatever happens re Rezza I think he has potential to be a decent player I really do .
It's not all relying on Arsenal though - in recent times we've produced Jenkinson, Solly, Shelvey and now Poyet, Cousins, Gomez and the fella who turned down United who has escaped my mind. Further investment in the youth system, which is not to the magnitude of investing in the first team squad will hopefully return more players of similar quality. Whether he uses it for Liege or to sell for straight profit - the telling contribution he made in his interview was that he plans to break even quickly.
But shouldn't that be the plan of every chairman of every business - breaking even at the very least?! In football that often means selling your better players to better teams, that will never change. I just don't understand the hysteria around the 'project'.
Well, he did say to begin with he did' nt want to sell off the young stars but to invest in them, or some such media friendly clap trap. Maybe the hysteria is to find out he changed his tune in less than a month, or simply because so many of us wanted a buyout to improve stuff, and now it seems nothing much will change. Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
I disagree. Lots of clubs throw money on an annual basis at trying to get into the Premiership - only 3 teams can make it. Throw in 3 relegated teams with their 'premiership players' and parachute payments - its impossible to 'guarantee' promotion. Therefore, instead of chucking money at it along with the other 5 -we are trying an alternative method. I think its worth a go. Why is it a surprise that Charlton cant / wont keep hold of a young player who is attracting interest from Premiership teams and Barcelona?!
The trouble with the Poyet situation is that he should have been offered a lucrative contract months ago. Fans like me and Dickplumb knew ages ago how good he was, yet the manager missed recognising a talent which was right under his nose; in fact he only came into the team when we sold Stephens(who by the way came on in the 89th minute in Brighton's 2-0 win on tuesday).
Yes true. Which is exactly why the 'RD coming in to the club, selling our best youngsters, ripping the heart out of the club etc' is typical Charlton fans' overreaction.
I assumed from his first interviews that he'd want to keep our youngsters for a few years to maximise their value. An example of not doing this in the past is when Liege sold Alex Witsel for £8m to Benfica and a year later he was sold at 4 times that price to Zenit. Staying up this season for me is imperative. Poyet may sign a contract (wishful thinking?) there will be no need to sell Cousins, Solly or Wiggins, with a few decent signings in the summer we could have a good season and then we could sell a few of the aforementioned at a higher value than we would this summer. On top of all that league 1 is dreadful, fans will leave in droves.
