I think its a sign of inexperience as a manager of people really. If he didn't think they were going to play their hearts out for Spurs - why did he pick them? The buck stops with the manager. The Adebayor situation is interesting: if the squad was supportive of AVB's decision to sideline him then bringing him back would of itself be very negative. No idea whether that is true though. As I've said before the manager's main job is to get the best out of the current squad. The threat to make wholesale changes is essentially an admission of defeat.
It's just semantics PNP but for me opinion minus fact = prejudice. It is so endemic in our society where everyone is 'enititled to their opinion' but that includes the opinion that the opinion is crap.
The problem with Sherwood is that I am not sure I get his tactics. So it is not such a leap to say the players don't either. I think he is right to have a go at some of the players. Dembele, who always seems to delay a pass, Paulinoho for drifting in and out, Capoue for being reckless, Walker and the whole team, accept Erickson for not being able to cross the ball, Vertongen for appearing if he doesn't give a f***. But I don't think it matters if he yells at them they all seem a fairly dispirited lot who got sold a bill of goods under Levy and it has failed. Nothing like working for a company you have no faith in... I am pretty sure Sherwood will go in the summer but if I was part of this team I would be asking for a transfer. Sherwood or not I don't trust Levy and would want to be elsewhere
There were facts though, Spurf. What facts would accept as relevant to this situation? I agree with you about the concept that all opinions are somehow equal, though. Wouldn't apply it here, but it can get very annoying when discussing objective facts.
Sure PNP fair point absolutely not unique to Spurs. But try to get inside Sherwood's thinking maybe he sees a few not bleeding for the cause like he used to and wants them to step it up and that is the only way he can get his message through. Crude but that's him.
I understand his frustration, if that's the case, but it's his job to do something about it and I think that publicly slagging the players off as a whole probably won't work. He already seems to have certain favourites and that'll cause rifts on it's own, but dividing the camp into his players and those he doesn't like is pretty amateurish.
In short, I get the impression, from all that's being said, and from some of our performances on the pitch, that Sherwood is not impressing the players. If he doesn't, as a new inexperienced manager, get the dressing room behing him and wanting to play for him, he's toast! Slagging them off publicly is not a great start. He should remember the old adage, " speak softly, but carry a big stick"
For what its worth I think A) sherwood will not be our manager come august 2014 B) sherwood was right to criticise the players on saturday...if I performed so badly in my job as a teaching assistant (doing simple things wrong, making basic mistakes and giving up half way through lessons) I would be criticised and would deserve it. C) I think there has been a bad reaction...hence this latest interview where sherwood says the players are playing for their futures...if they have reacted badly then **** em...they are hugely rewarded and should be able to take criticism Our current problems stem from Levy insisting on AVB and a DoF set up...if we get rid of the DoF then maybe sherwood could do a job for us but I suspect that we will keep a DoF, will get a new manager and be pulling our hair out in another 12 months
I'm confused. Most people seem to think Sherwood isn't good enough to be our coach, but somehow if he was also responsible for transfers the job would be one he could do?
I think he could be a good coach...but accept I am in a tiny minority... But for him to be a success he would need total control of what players are signed When I say that he wont be our manager come august...it is because I can not see levy keeping him not cos I want him sacked
Roo said: "Whilst it's nice for fans to hear the "right" comments he makes (which don't wash with me) it's concerning that he's only been in the job a few months and he's throwing his weight around quite a bit." Well firstly thank you for giving us the opportunity for more criticism of the manager, because we don't get enough of that on this board. Secondly I wonder if a manager you approved of did exactly the same thing, whether you would accuse them of "throwing their weight about". Some might even compliment them for doing so. And if we win the NLD will it be only because the Ars have so many injuries?
IMO, there is no excuse for publicly slagging off your own players as a manager, whatever your name is!...
The players have had a clear the air meeting among themselves ,according to Sandro it became quite heated. http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1748419/tottenham-two-hour-players-only-summit?cc=3436. There's trouble up mill!
You say people having a go at him for no reason is prejudice but isn't a 4-0 defeat by Chelsea, being knocked out of the league cup by West Ham, losing 1-0 to Norwich and being easily beaten by the goons in the FA Cup without a fight reason enough to see Sherwood isn't the right man for us? Add in the fact he keeps embarrassing himself and the club in interviews and I think it's completely fair to slate him and want someone else in.
My initial view of Sherwood was that he was a slimly scumbag, mouthing off without having any substance behind his words and after his honeymoon period will get found out and end up only being here for this season. However I thought I may have been harsh so decided to judge Sherwood on his management with us and he did change my view of him as I started to like his style and found myself agreeing with his words much of the time, so now I'm sitting in-between as to if he deserves to stay next year, but one thing I know is that he has done a fine job for someone with no experience and can't be fully blamed for heavy defeats as much of the problems stem from before he arrived.
Do we at Spurs want someone with no experience though? He's the manager so if it isn't his fault then who's is it?
1. If you don't like the opinions on this board... You know what to do! 2. Yes, any manager that'd been in the job 5 mins and openly criticised our squad to the public would not get my approval. - especially when things behind the scenes weren't great anyway. 3. No, it'll probably be down to a good performance from us, or a poor performance from Arsenal.
I read that the job is his ,even if we finish outside the euro placings,so i'm going to sit back and see what happens, because our misgivings or support count for nothing really,as the club take no notice of what is on here
