The thing is with stadium naming rights we have a stadium which already has a name, and therefore the sponsor would have to place their name before St Mary's. I always think it sounds more tacky when you have a long name like that. "The SportsDirect.com St James' Park" was one of course. Arsenal and City's work because, that is the name of their stadium. You call it 'The Emirates' and 'The Etihad', rather than 'The Etihad City of Manchester Stadium' for example.
I know St Mary's is linked to our club by its history, but the ground is new. Our historical name for a ground is The Dell. Etihad and Emirates are quite nice names, but some would be awful...classy only, please.
Name change I would be dead against. Stadium name I don't really care, to me it will always be St Mary's.
So this new chairman of yours is a Yank isn't he? Reminds me of this
Simon Peach currently answering some questions from fans about what was said during his lunch with Krueger.
I'm asked the same question every time I go over there...............I get the feeling they don't think we Brits travel!
Stadium naming rights don't really bother me. And, to be honest, changing the team name doesn't either, because we all know there's only one thing it's ever going to be. Southampton Saints. And I'm fine with that.
You're right. But they now called it The Etihad Stadium, and have dropped the City of Manchester name. My point is that if we want to keep St Mary's it may look tacky with a sponsor.
