Where are you getting your stats from? Everywhere I look (including the itv commentary team backing this up) he has played 37 games and scored 18 goals. P.s. Lol, roflmao, roflcopter, LOL, hahahahaha
Cini is making the strange point that if he scores a hattrick in one game bit doesn't score for the next 2 he will say no goal in 2 games. Other people would point out that he has scored 3 in 3. Surely scoring more than one in a game deserves some recognition?
Yes, but I would place more emphasis on spreading the load of your goals. Afterall, a game is only worth 3 points whether you score a hat-trick or just the one. However, after looking at the stats of Suarez, Lewandowski and Higuain it appears that no strikers are that great at spreading the load. I really thought at least one of them would be scoring in more than half their appearances!
Carling Cup - 1 app (as a sub), 0 goals FA Cup - 5 apps (all as sub), 4 goals scored in 3 of those games Prem - 25 apps (all starting), 12 goals scored in 10 of those games CL - 9 apps (all starting), 3 goals scored in 3 of those games
Lets break down Giroud's stats: Premiership: Played 26, Scored 12 and Assisted 7. Against the top league sides - Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U, Spurs: He has only scored one, and that was against Spurs. He achieved no assists. Champions League: Played 7, Scored 2 and Assisted 1. Against the top league sides - Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Napoli: He scored one against Dortmund, one against Napoli and an away assist against Dortmund. FA Cup: Played 3, Scored 3 and Assisted 0. Against the top league sides - Liverpool and Everton: He scored 2 against Everton Those are decent stats but nothing to write home about. What this does prove is that against top opposition in the league, he is struggling. He has faired better in the Champions league and has scored and assisted in two games that helped prove a positive result. The FA cup, he provided a match winning performance against a good Everton side. In summary, a good squad player but not first choice CF, for a top Premiership side with high aspirations.
As a barometer of goalscoring perfection... Ronaldo has made 35 appearances for Real and scored in 24 of those games (with a total of 38 goals spread over those 24 games). Last season, Messi made 51 appearances for Barca and scored in 37 of those games (with a total of 60 goals spread over those 37 games). So I suppose it looks like a world class forward at the top of his game scores in about 70% of his appearances. Giroud is at about 38% this season. Higuain is at 42% this season. Lewandowski is at 42% this season. Suarez at 45% this season. Sturridge is at 72% this season (63% for all his games at Liverpool). Maybe we were after the wrong Liverpool striker?? Wayne Rooney is at 37%
Ar5e... just realised I'd copied and pasted 2 FA cup games twice for Giroud. So it's 39 appearances, scored 18 goals in 15 of those games. So he's at 38%.
No point comparing Giroud to these guys as he's not in the same class as them. Giroud has done reasonably well but what fans have to bear in mind is that he is backed by some top class midfielders. So when you think that Giroud is being serviced by the likes of Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey, Rosicky etc, and in an attacking Wenger team, then his stats look rather ordinary.
Girouds a good player we should keep him. He's a great second choice. The fact is we need a TOP class striker to match the likes of City/Bayern/Barca etc.. without one it will be just more of the same.
Actually basing goals on appearences does'nt really tell us much. Conversion rate is where you really see a strikers efficiency. According to OPTA. Giroud is 0.12 - In other words he needs around 8 shots for every goal he scores. Whereas Sturridge is around 1 in 3. Jackson Martinez 0.33 Sturridge 0.30 Suarez 0.26 Higuian 0.26 Aguero 0.25 Dzeko 0.25 Falcao 0.24 Van Persie 0.23 (down from 0.28 last Season) C Ronaldo 0.23 - lower than normal. On the plus side Samuel Eto'o at Chelsea is only on 0. 10 this year. The most impressive in Europe this year is not Messi or Ronaldo its Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In All competitions Apps: 38 Goals: 38 Assists: 14 and a 0.40 conversion rate. Looks to have a few years left in him.. Worth a cheeky bid in the Summer?
I could argue that that doesn't tell you much either as you don't know how easy those shots were. Moral of the story, you can use stats to show anything you want really. The key stat is that my eyes tell me Giroud is good enough to be first choice.
Yeah but as Toledo used to say (remember that poor b*stard?!) Giroud does more for the team than just score. He's a focal point for the team to play around. He holds the ball up well, he helps out in defence and imo his overall work rate is top notch. No he's not the best finisher but his overall contribution is very decent. Personally I think there are players out there who can do his role, albeit slightly better so I'd like to go for someone like that. Problem is if you do switch your style of forward you may well get a better goal scorer but the team itself will have to change the way it plays which may be self-defeating. One thing people aren't acknowledging either with OG is that I think he's really missing Theo and Aaron in the team, likewise Ãzil is too. When you have someone like Giroud who brings others into the game you really need them to be contributing with the goals and we're currently a bit light there too. To sum up. I like him. I don't love him. I appreciate the job he does for us and think he's under-appreciated but I reckon you could find a superior version of him out there. A Mandzukic or Dzeko type figure.
I don't think we NEED a target man. Be good to keep Giroud as our second choice but we could easily adapt out system to accommodate a player like Costa or Cavani.(RVP worked just fine) C2all me a dreamer but that's what we need to push on a level. ONE world class striker would make a enormous difference to this side. Bench: Vermalen, Wilshere, Giroud, Rosicky, Oxo, Arteta, Monreal. -------------------Sczezney------------------ Sagna---Merts-------Koscieleny---Gibbs -------------Flamini-------Ramsey---------- -----------------------Ozil----------------------- Walcott----------Cavani---------Carzorla
Totally agree, we are so close to being there, a top striker would make us a proper force like back in the days. We have the money to splash out on one really good striker and Giroud as a solid back-up.
I do still think we need a top class central midfielder too. Flamini was only ever brought as a backup and while he's been great, he's not been GREAT. And Arteta has never been great ever anyway so having to rely on either of those is always a bit of a weak point. One of the Bender's should remain high on the list. If Sagna goes then that leaves a RB high on the list too. Could be an expensive Summer. Or... if past transfer windows are to be expected, it will be a summer of no activity followed by a massive signing of a player we don't really need (ie. attacking lightweight midfielder) at midnight on deadline day followed by Wenger saying that he didn't need a new striker, central midfielder or right back as Sanogo, Diaby and Jenkinson are ready to shine.
We're talking about a player who can't dribble, can't shoot, can't header, can't pass, hell, he couldn't even cheat on his wife properly, the guy is just hopeless and a total embarrassment. I'd sell him, we'd get about 10 million for him, we're likely signing a new starting striker anyway, so sign the new striker, and spend the 10 million for Giroud on a backup who's not totally incompetent.
Girouds combined 19 goals and assists in the league this season have him 5th behind only Suarez, sturridge, Rooney and aguero. That's pretty good considering the type of player he is.
