Does this mean the ref screwed up? If so the penalty was also a ref mistake. So,when will the game be replayed?
Just because it wasn't a red card, it doesn't automatically follow that it wasn't a penalty. It wasn't, of course, but the officials haven't admitted as much.
In this case it does, they would only rescind because it wasn't a foul. They wouldn't rescind over the more subjective goal scoring opportunity.
I think they would. I always go to the example of Cahill(at Bolton) on Lennon where he took him out on the halfway line and the red card was rescinded as despite Lennon going 1 on 1 with the 'keeper being a formality with his pace. The "last man" rule didn't need changing, it just needed to be applied with commonsense and not rigidly without though, like how offsides are applied more appropriately now.
Woops, haha. The ref must've thought Cahill gave him the nosebleed he got from passing the halfway line then
What annoys me is that the punishment for an honest defender who tries to make a tackle in the penalty area but mistimes it slightly is harsher than a cheating bastard who pulls someone over just outside the area. The red card should be for intent not outcome.
Yes, I'd agree with that. There seems to be no distinctions involved in these situations. Clearly, a cynical foul that is intended to prevent a player taking advantage of a goal scoring opportunity, or a tackle that is completely reckless, should be treated differently to any honest attempt to win the ball.
It's annoying because it's such an obvious thing to apply commonsense to. The only time when a foul in the area should also be a red card is if the player litterally has a tap in to an open goal because that means they're gambling on preventing an easy goal and hoping they miss the pen, anyother goalscoring chance should be a booking and if the player's going away from goal then a penalty on its own is enough. Even Blatter realises that a red card and penalty is harsh in most situations and has called for it to be changed. This is all by the by though as Kaboul didn't even foul anyone. Once again we're punished twice for the referee's mistake.
"The ref must've thought Cahill gave him the nosebleed he got from passing the halfway line then" Think the main cause of the nosebleed was caused by Scotty running in a straight line.
I never know when Ronaldo is faking it.A lot of the time he goes down like he's been shot rolling over 4 times I mean,he does it so often I never know whether its a bad injury or not.Tough on the ref!
I've always found the goal scoring opportunity thing strange. I've seen a 100 yard free kick go in (Robbo). I've seen goals scored direct from corner kicks and everywhere else on the pitch. Every time a player has the ball at his feet, it's a goal scoring opportunity.
If a defender fouls Messi near the halfway line then he would have a case to say he was denied a goal scoring opportunity. If wellbeck was fouled in the box, the opposition could feel aggrieved if the ref said it was a goal scoring opportunity. At some point video technology will happen and sin bins, players could be sent to the sin bin instead of a red card if a penalty is awarded unless it's dangerous play or if the opposition is clean through and fouled by the keeper, especially if the keeper is a goon.
It was neither a penalty or a sending off, so one blow of the whistle incorrectly punished us twice. We have had 3 red cards rescinded in the last couple of seasons, Hudd last season, Rose and Kaboul this.
