In praise of … Kingston upon Hull

City on the edge, so often derided in the company of Hell and Halifax, is now living through a purple patch

Its most famous literary resident, Philip Larkin, once said of Hull that it was "a little on the edge of things, I think even its natives would say that". The city on the edge, so often derided in the company of Hell and Halifax, is now living through a purple patch. In November it was named 2017 UK city of culture, to the surprise of even some of its residents, and at the weekend its resurgent football team earned a place in the FA Cup semi-final for the first time since 1930. Rugby league fans will recall a famous former visit to Wembley, for the Hull KR v Hull FC Challenge Cup final in 1980, when so many of the city's population travelled to Wembley that a local wag left a makeshift sign on the road south that read: "Last one out turn the lights off!" At the risk of alienating Sheffield United fans, we hope the city that brought us William Wilberforce, the Housemartins and Everything But the Girl reaches its first FA Cup final in April.

"A city that brought us the Housemartins".

I'd have left that reference out.

I know technically they started up in Hull, but there's only two Hull lads in there. And, one of the members will be supporting Sheff Utd.

    Decent article other than that.

Were any of Everything But The Girl actually from Hull - weren't they a Uni band too? Excellent though, and better than the Housemartins

Tracey Thorn was in the Marine Girls; Ben Watt was on Cherry Red, which was the Marine Girls' label, too. When he got to Hull Uni, he found out she was also there, paged her on the Union's PA.....and the rest is history.

So....not from Hull, but the name was lifted off Turner's shop on Bev Road.
