    It starts here!

The first day of the 2014 Cheltenham Festival, kicks off with the usual curtain raiser, the ultra competitive Supreme Novices Hurdle.
There are any number who can win this, so any bet has to be deemed speculative. I like Irving a lot, but also dislike his price a lot.

Mullins would seem to hold a whip hand with Vatour, Valseur Lido and Wicklow Brave, Henderson is doubly represented with Vaniteux and Josses Hill, while Nichols relies on just Irving.

My own dough is on Western Boy, for whom I'm hoping that the faster ground will enable him to reverse placings with Vatour (acknowledging MOG who also thinks this)

I'd love Wilde Blue Yonder to put his habit of falling at the last fence behind him, and at least get placed, but that may be a dream too far!
Hope the guys going to the track have a great time - don't get too giddy that you can't read the card - and good luck to all forumites today <ok>

    You're too forgiving Reebs.

Anyone looked at a canny coincidence re Champagne Fever? He has to find 14 lbs on the book to win the Supreme on officials going into the race. He has to find 13lbs going into the Arkle.

I raised the point very early this season that I thought CF would disappoint at some point this year. He's done just that.

Speaking of Davids....David Williams of Ladbrokes always reminds of David Cameron for some reason..similar confirmation and demeanour.

Corals have just informed me that they are going 4's on the Fly from 8.15am tmz.

    No thanks,no chance.

Would love to be proved wrong mind you.

Well I've looked through 3 cards and can't see anything decent to bet on. I'll have to have a look at this one that's on in Gloucestershire.

Trying to work out who to cover my Fly ante-posts with and I'm torn between The New One and The Tent. Leaning towards the Tent as I reckon he's got the best turn of foot as shown by the way he travelled between the last and second last in the Christmas Hurdle but then of course there's that hill... Hoping the Fly will raise the roof, imagine the scenes if he did, but can't say I'm hugely confident but you're probably kidding yourself if you're too dogmatic in a race such as this. Who wins this race? Let's hope the answer is RACING :)

Our Conor's owner, Barry Connell, is donating any prize-money the horse wins in aid of JT McNamara. What a class act. If the Champ doesn't win I'll happily cheer on Our Conor. (Or my saver <laugh>)

Hope all the horses return safe and sound is the main thing. There's always that worry when the ground is as good as it is at the Festival.

Best bet of the day for me tomorrow is VALDEZ in the Arkle. He has the highest Topspeed figure on Racing Post and I was really taken with his Newbury victory in a very fast time. Jumping at pace then staying on up the hill really looks tailor made for him.
