PNP posted yesterday in the Bill Nich but seems to have gone un-noticed. This is important news, IB was responsible for finding Sandro, JV and Lloris....but isn't this Baldini's job now??? Imo, Broomfield should never have been allowed to leave, I'm glad he's back, under the the orrible snout of the Goons is a nice bonus too! http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/463783/Tottenham-chairman-David-Levy-reaches-for-the-spy http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/d...field-back-to-spurs-had-been-set-for-arsenal/ From elsewhere....."Franco Baldini's future at Tottenham is under scrutiny. The Daily Mail says sporting director Baldiniâs future also appears in jeopardy after Spurs lured former chief scout Ian Broomfield back to the club by hijacking a proposed switch from QPRâs scouting team to Arsenalâs. Tottenham insist Baldini, who arrived only last year, and Broomfield will work in tandem but chairman Daniel Levy seems determined to restructure again behind the scenes at White Hart Lane. Tim Sherwood is understood to have not been consulted about Broomfieldâs return."
I dunno if this is good news because we got back a good scout/chap or bad news because we're about the restructure, AGAIN. If its that Van Gaal won't work with a DoF then i'll take it though. Or is Harry returning in the summer?
I'm sure that I remember SC saying something about us not having a real scouting network after Broomfield left, but don't take that as gospel. This might actually be something that Baldini approves of, as I doubt he wanted to do all of the work. There are plenty of rumours about Redknapp leaving QPR at the end of the season, regardless of how it ends. One for the gossip columns, I think.
"A further round of musical chairs looms at White Hart Lane, with the technical director, Franco Baldini, also expected to leave. Baldini, who joined only last June, has come to be blamed for the poor performance of the seven summer signings." http://www.theguardian.com/football...m-hotspur-chelsea-premier-league-match-report
I know you're quoting this HBIC, and it's not your opinion, but how can Baldini be blamed? Soldado - excellent record in spain, prior to his arrival Eriksen - seen as one of the best up and coming no10's in the world Lamela - seen as the next big young talent Paulinho - seen as another big talent from Brazil. It's not Baldini's fault that these players haven't set the world alight, it's the people who work with them day to day who haven't got the best out of them. So this year it's going to be Baldini who gets the blame
Not quite Roo, I get the feeling some of those signings were Baldini/Levy. Before he arrived, TS was part of a 'transfer committee' and I think was left out of the loop on a number of them. We do not need to be reminded the squad needed money spent in other positions. The fact most have failed any sustained impact so far compounds that simple issue. Baldini spent our Bale money, are you delighted with his endeavours so far?
Soldado - AVB wanted him, Baldini (and Levy) wanted Benteke Capoue - AVB wanted him, given we were regularly linked with him last season Paulinho - we were in negotiations with Corinthians before Baldini arrived Lamela - £26m up front with a further £4m in installments? We were Levy'd by Roma on that deal Chadli - we had Townsend and Sigurdsson as options on the left, so why did we sign a third left winger? The whole system has failed this season: Baldini made mistakes with our transfers both coming in and going out, Levy made mistakes by sanctioning some of the moves (certainly the Lamela and Soldado deals are out of character for him), AVB made errors in regards to tactics and style of play, Levy made a second bunch of mistakes offering Sherwood an 18-month contract when everyone knows he'll be off when Van Gaal is available after the World Cup, and Sherwood's made mistakes in tactics and coaching.
but those players have had so much to deal with. New country, new league, weird formations which don't suit their game, lots of new faces to gt used to etc etc. My point is that they were good player before we signed them. The reason they haven't performed has got to be down to AVB and sherwood, surely?
this is what I'm getting at mate, how can the blame be put on Baldini? He's done nothing wrong IMO in going for Lamela. No one has a crystal ball and at the time everyone was raving about what a talent he is. I can also see why we signed Chadli. - supposedly looked like a good addition after his performances for Twente, and the fact that Siggy had done very little. Ok, granted, we didn't solve the LB issue, but we did try.
I can assure you he was being watched well before avb's name was even mentioned at this club, hes been monitored a long time, so he in particular is a bit of a letdown for me considering how long he was assessed. But it just goes to show it doesn't always work out even with the best diligence.
Capoue looked decent until that fat Spanish prick sat on his ankle, to be fair. Then he seemed to fall out with Sherwood instantly over something relatively minor (lateness?) and has barely been seen since, except as a centre-half. Still looks a decent player to me, though we might never see the best of him.
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with ability at all, judging by Saturday's performance, Notso!
I should correct myself, his ability as a CB is suspect in this league, more than ok in Ligue1, and looked ok here for one match, I recall people surprised. I knew he was utility, supposedly, I think it was West ham wasn't it, made him look a right muppet, clueless, looked like a Sunday Park player.
Baldini is no different from Comoli, a talent spotter, not a DOF. If you look at the players Comoli spotted, most have all turned into top players but he was a crap DOF, who caused issues and never helped the manager build a balanced team. Same with Baldini, Lamela, Soldado are clearly talented and I'm sure in a few years the players that flop with us will star elsewhere but he also never helped the manager create a balanced team. Best way for us to be a success, is have a manager who works with a head scourt, that way the maanager can build a team with players he wants, rather then having to work with players the manager wasn't keen on.
I've said this many times before but we need a manager/regime that dictates a style of play/formation/philosophy across ALL the teams. Youth, reserves, U21, first teams (etc). There is no path to progress up through the ranks and when players come up they have to learn a whole new bunch of team mates when they should just be able to slot in and continue as they were before but with different players around them. This is what Arsenal and Barca do. New signings can play in the reserves and then just slot in. Less pressure to perform as they know what their team is doing. How often have you thought "ohh, <insert high profile player> is out for Arsenal and he's been replaced with <insert complete unknown>. That will affect them!" only for them to play exactly the same with no detriment to the team. Now can you imagine that happening with Spurs? We can barely bring in another international player to replace an injured starter without the system changing. This is where the DoF role SHOULD differ from the chief scout, i think. The DoF should be overseeing all age groups, working alongside all the coaches of the various teams and getting them singing from the same hymn sheet.
"This is where the DoF role SHOULD differ from the chief scout, i think. The DoF should be overseeing all age groups, working alongside all the coaches of the various teams and getting them singing from the same hymn sheet." The main difference between DoF and manager is in the viewpoint on players. The manager is short-term (I need position X filled now) . The DoF should be long-term (in the next couple of years, the squad will not have decent players in position X - do the Academy have talent in the pipeline for that position and time frame, or do I have to get the scouts out looking for new signings etc) .
He struggled badly with long balls and I don't mean that disrespectfully to the hoofers at Upton Park. I guess that they don't play like that in France, but it looked completely alien to him and he was awful.
Agree completely. Successful clubs/managers work out the right system, try to buy good players and then make them fit the system. Unsuccessful ones have prejudices about which players are good or bad and try to build the team around the players' perceived skills which inevitably implies change every time someone is injured.
