Inmagine a Greater Hull Council much more evenly balanced. It would force a raising of standards and lead to better governance. Labour has been the slow death of Hull since 1945, cynically bullshitting the electorate that it is fighting their corner against the evil posh fat cats in London. In reality, they are like an evil drug dealer selling more smack to a befuddled addict and telling him 'THis'll wean you off your addiction and give you an instant sustained high."
Hessle would still be Hessle, just like Wetherby isn't a part of Leeds - they're only connected administratively. I imagine the boundary extension won't happen, people are too selfish and would rather something small doesn't affect them rather than look at the bigger picture and the greater good. Just like MPs and councillors like things the way they are because it allows them to selfishly line their own pockets.
I’m looking forward to reading John Walkington’s report on the proposed boundary extension.
The reason the boundary change will never happen... mentality: The difference between the Leeds boundary and the Hull boundary is that the Wessies outside of Leeds are happy to call themselves part of it, where-as people in the villages actually joined onto Hull aren't happy to call themselves a part of Hull. Far too many old NIMBYS in this area who don't want or like change and aren't bothered about progression. Take this quote for instance: He talks as if it is some sort of war! NIMBYS don't like to see the bigger picture, such as the true image of Hull being perceived nationally would probably help attract more businesses and retailers to the area, which in turn creates more jobs - not just for people in Hull, but for the people living in East Riding too. A lot of ER folk are Hull expats. Some have moved out cos they've more money now or cos the services/schools etc are better. Most work in Hull itself. From anecdotal evidence, many people move out because of the way the city is run.
Hull should take these ‘suburbs’ by force. I live in one of them and I’d be prepared to ‘open the gate’ for the Hull expeditionary.
It would be make economic sense to broaden Hull's boundaries. But whilst we have this present lot in charge of HCC with their deep hatred of anyone they think 'has a few bob' and the years of cronyism that infests Guildhall no=one in their right mind would let them get their grubby hands on parts of the ER. Sad but true. It works for virtually every other city I can think of but Hull ? No chance until the electorate demands a change. How about ERCC taking over Hull ?
Hull already receives more per capita than the East Riding does, so how would increasing the size of the area covered by the council, increasing the logistical area to which they need to provide services with effectively a net reduction in income help ?? It would also reduce the extra income the council gets due to it's perceived inner city status
