Ak, I may have got this completely wrong but there seem to be examples of some of the women here taking the matronymic rather than the patronymic. This I understand. What I don't understand is why those with a patronymic have an 's' after their father's name, e.g. Gunnersdottir and frithriksdottir, but those with a matronymic do not have the 's', e.g. Helgadottir, Gisladottir. Could you explain, please?

Spent yesterday at the Clydesider's orientation training event for Commonwealth Games volunteers, lots of razzamataz etc.

Off to Courchevel today for some skiing and hopefully some lovely alpine sunshine.

Afternoon all. I trust that you are all gripped by a sudden heatwave as we are here. Spent a productive morning putting the final touches to the onion bed, now I will cover it, give it a few more days to warm up, then plant it out. :

Really did need a cold when I came in, and grabbed the first one from the fridge that came to hand. It turned out to be Westmalle Trappist that has an Alc. rating of 9.5% I need to do some more this afternoon before I watch the England team egg chasing. Better not go for a second one.

 

Veggie beds dug, 5% of lawn demossed, cold beer consumed during very good England rugby performance...lovely day all round.

 

And Manchester won't win the Cup......
