Can the council not look to develop this into flats to sell on or rent out, could be a way to raise income, even if it is only a drop in the ocean? they always talk about shortage in accommodation.
Aye got off with some dirty women in there, was a step below Tower in the late 80's which is saying something!!! Got any info on it Olm what was it originally etc??
A potted history... The New York Hotel was more famously known as Alfred Percy’s York Commercial and Temperance Hotel and Restaurant; opening c.1880, it was popular with teetotallers and temperance enthusiasts in Hull. Initially a single property, it soon expanded both east and west, taking in the adjoining properties in Ocean Place. Known locally as Percy’s Cafe, it was partly demolished and re-built in the 1920s, and altered again in 1954, much as we see it today. From c.1961 it was known as the New York Hotel and Ballroom, a popular dancing venue well into the 1960s. More recently known as Jack’s Nightclub & Bar, it has suffered badly during many redevelopment projects over the years, and is presently derelict and awaiting demolition. The property and the adjoining Salvation Army premises, along with the former Albert Hall Music Hall in Midland Street, are the subject of a planning application for the construction of a hotel and car park that will require the demolition of most of this block. The plans were approved in November 2005 but work is yet to commence. They shouldn't allow the Albert Hall Music Hall in Midland Street to be demolished, it's the last remaining music hall in Hull and there's a group who've been trying to save it. Aye would like to have a look in there myself. I see the Rio diner is still there!! Trying to think what it used to be called, was dodgy as in there and the "hotel". My aunty used to live in Turner Court a few doors down.
Externally, above ground level, it isn't that bad of a building and doesn't look like it would take much to bring back to life - I can only imagine that internally it must be buggered. That said, there has been a theory going round for years that the council has fingers in pies at demolition companies, hence the amount of buildings the council demolishes. I'm starting to think they have shares in a fencing company too - the same fencing has gone up around where LA's was, the site of the post-war pre-fabs across the road from Hull Truck on Ferensway and also around the former register office, next to Napoleons Casino.
The roof fell in and apparently it's completely shagged inside. Still, like you say, the shell looks in decent nick and you'd think they could just strip it out and start again. Opposite the station and just out of the city centre, it wouldn't be a bad site for a boutique hotel.
They destroyed those flakey old shops on Ferensway almost a year ago now, opposite the Inland Revenue. Fair enough, they were mostly all empty and looking ****, but months later it's still just a fenced off pit of smashed bricks. Anyone know if anything's actually happening there, or is it just being left to chance?
Left to chance by the looks of things. Same as LA's site and former register office. A developer bought CircusCircus, but looks like they're land-banking like Manor Properties. They had an artists impression created of new offices for the site, but it looks like it would only get built if a firm wanting to occupy the offices are willing to pay for it to be built. It also brings about a good point about the New York Hotel.... now visitors will be greeted to more diagonal wooden fencing and the backs of some buildings.
Shame, I always thought it was a nice looking frontage - hoped that it could be renovated to preserve the history of the city. Here's hoping the hotel that replaces it isn't going to be another bland flat-pack box like the Ibis and Travelodge ones slapped together in recent years.

But now Hull City Council has served a notice on the owner to carry out work on it. Surely there must be some legal recourse that the council can use to intervene. It's been going on for years. As has the Cornmill hotel eyesore on Holderness Road/Mount Pleasant. Isn't that also owned by some Londoners? Why is our council so feckless? I swear if we'd had a better one we would be a much more forward thinking city generally instead of just reacting aimlessly when its too late. The New York place is the first thing you see when you come out of the train station car park. What a mess to behold for a visitors first view of Hull.
Did you have scooters in those days OLM ? I remember a punky type lad from Hull on a pink vespa with photos of his girlfriend in various states of undress Stuck all over said scooter. Use to get lads nicking the photos off on Rally's
