OK. Imagine that you are a seasoned player in the premier league with £3-4 million in the bank. You've always dreamed of playing for England and winning the World cup. At what point do you say, sorry boss, Country comes first! I can't imagine that the like of Man United would say to Rooney that they wouldn't play him if he made that decision. Personally, I have two left feet so don't even play locally, but I would like to think that if I was in that position I would be prepared to put my Country first and do everything to win a major title. Am I the only one?
Why would a club say no a player playing in the world cup? It's not as if the player could get injured and not be able to play for the club at an important time, as the season is finished by the time the World Cup kicks off... For me it's club first, every time. But I can't imagine why a club would refuse a player the privilege of playing for his Country.
Your sarcasm is not appreciated Mr Beverley! Apologies, I don't keep tabs on international news, or top stories unless it's city. Fill me in?
Was thinking about this the other day when Scholes retired, I bet he regrets not playing in the Euros now. Playing for your country is the top honour in football.
It'd depend where I was playing. If it were Leeds or some club I felt attached to, club over country. If I was just mercenarying it out for some plodders whose fans I was indifferent about, I'd probably go international more often.
