What I don't get, is this inability Powell has to judge the moment. He swings from a cross bar last week and gets the juices flowing again and then follows it up 5 days later with a statement that is about inspiring as pissing in the kit bag.

He should have been locking the door, throwing tea cups, giving it large, this is not the time to bottle it.

What should he have said, then?

And how do we know he didn't lay in to the players in the dressing room after the game?

Okay then I will give it a go at answering the Question... None of us are at (or have been) at Championship level Football so we cant ever tell 100% for sure what its like... But at the end of the day I'm guessing this part of Management is a bit like diplomacy, you build good contacts with other Managers because you dont know when you'll need help or if you could shoot yourself in the foot.

For example... If Powell comes out and bad mouths anyone, then it can irritate the opposition Manager and if ever Powell wants to loan X player from a club that Manager is at he could well be reminded of today (the same could apply if ever he wants some advice on tactics etc... as Managers are constantly speaking with each other)

Another example is that a Manager has to be careful how the players react... He'll know his Squad better than most so if he comes out saying we were rubbish we deserved to lose, that could ultimately have a detrimental effort on the harmony within the dressing room and the players could deliberately rebel against the Manager getting him the sack (something I dont think is happening at Charlton at the moment)...

At the same time if the Manager comes out and says "the opposition was just better than us today we tried our best" then the players may be relieved the Manager has taken the pressure (of a bad performance) off them and they'll want to repay him with a stronger performance the next week...

Also Powell might have a feeling the players havent tried as hard because of the Cup game next week so from the privacy of the Dressing Room has in fact given the players a bollocking.

At the end of the day its only the players themselves that know if they've put in a worthy performance no one can say others... I used to be a long distance runner and running at 10-mile distance I used to have a PB of just over 1-hr... One race it took me 1-hr 20mins (so on the face of it a terrible performance and terrible effort seeing my parents and friends had come to watch me) of course later it turned out I was injured (an injury that ended my running career) but the time I did that run on the day didnt tell the whole story.

Again with dressing downs... I've got in trouble at work for my performance in past years (as I'm sure we all have) and there were times when my Manager would take me into a meeting room to discuss it privately, afterwards I'd work harder for them as it was done and respected thing, other times I would get a dressing down in front of everyone else and it would be the most embarrassing thing possible and I wouldnt want to make the effort (its the exact same issue Powell has coming out speaking in press conferences)

This is not about what he should have said but what he did say! FFS. That comment was like Churchill saying it's ok, Adolf, we can afford to lose the Home Counties.

Powell is banking on a wembley trip to mask his many failings this season, and he has had a lot of luck with the teams we played so far....

Every time Powell fecks up, so many come running to his side with petty lame excuses, it's not his fault, it's the previous board, the pitch, the media, Sagittarius aligning with the moon, now your suggesting he is saying things he is not saying or may be saying but is not saying....

Well you and Vol are criticising him for saying something, which presumably means you think there was something else he could have said that would have been better. I just wondered what you think that something else could have been.

Bit far fetched though typical... Losing the Home Counties to Adolf would have been far worse than relegation, at the end of the day Saturday was just a Football match (a Sport) nothing more

Isn't it more important to ask why he plays Cousins on the right, just as he did with Stephens, and before that Pritchard.? I used to like Pritchard, but I think he's finished now, Cousins clearly hates playing there, it just weakens two positions.

To appease is to lose, to compromise is to fail, excuses are for woman and little boys, When winning counts nothing else is good enough. Bob Reynolds-manager the dukes head.

Instead of trying to change the post around, is that the sort of comment that you expect a leader of men to come out with? And is the timing correct? Is that how the fans that travelled feel?

Fair question and I don't like it either. My answer would be this:

Green isn't good enough. Wilson is good enough to play on the right, and ideally would play there with Solly at RB. Obviously Solly is out long-term, and Powell clearly doesn't think Nego is up to it, hence he puts Wilson at RB. Pritchard (who I agree was poor this season) had been quite effective on the right, not necessarily individually but team-wise, and there was a stat that we earned considerably more points with him at RM than when anyone else played there. Powell sees Cousins as a similar player (though better) to Pritchard, hence he plays him on the right.

There is also the Poyet factor, which, coupled with Jackson's continuing knack of scoring crucial goals, means that there isn't a place in the middle for Cousins. Personally, I would drop Jacko to the bench to move Cousins into the middle, leaving Jacko to play the impact sub role he performed so well against Ipswich on NYD. I can see, however, that dropping the captain would be a big move, particularly given the experience we would be missing out on in the middle.

As I say, we're not going to get the best out of Cousins while he's playing anywhere else but in the middle, so it's obviously not ideal that he is playing there. I'm not entirely sure what the solution is though.

I don't understand your point about the timing - it was a post-match interview, when else was he going to say it? The Football League determined that we would go to Leicester on that date, and it just happened to come after the win at Hillsborough. In terms of trying to keep the momentum going it was one of the last fixtures we would have chosen.

It's not the most inspiring comment, I agree. But his job is to inspire the players, who will set much more store by what he says to them in the dressing room and on the training ground (and obviously we don't know what he says there) than what he says to the media.

I read a comment today that Powell thinks the Midfield is more balanced with Ajdarevic in the side as he feels Astrit plays the No.10 role we've been crying out for...

To that extent I very much agree but I reckon Powell thinks he needs a new Right-Midfielder OR a new Right-Back to complete the jigsaw... Because we're coming to the Business end of the season I do believe he's struggling to find that Right-Midfielder so for now I reckon we're gonna have to complete the season as we are (Not ideal I know)

Hopefully we'll survive this season as we are and one of those two positions will be Powell's priority in the Summer now (probably a Left-Midfielder as well)... Once thats done I reckon we'll pretty much play a 4-5-1 or a 4-2-3-1 sort of formation to accommodate Cousins / Poyet / Ajdarevic in the middle (Should the latter stay of course).

We cant also forget Tudgay... I've always thought of him as a Striker yet I've heard he can also play Right-Mid so once he's at full fitness it could be a case of him playing out there (or even Church?)

Timing i.e. like we can go bottom next week. Is this the time to make out any defeat is acceptable? It's weak management. Once again, your placing stock in what you don't know as opposed to what you do. Powell might not say anything of importance in the dressing room, and given our current position, whatever he is saying is not working. He said what was quoted. Which is what cost people like McMillan, Gerald Ratner and Louis Spence their jobs. The fans deserve to know that relegation is not an option, at least go down swinging. How can you be happy loosing 3.0 with the trap door to division 1 opening wider. Have some dignity but don't be a pussy.

If we lose on Saturday will it make the players more determined or more resigned to their fate? What great speech can we expect next? "Our kit man will be pleased we didn't muddy our gear"?

Trouble is its obvious straight away... If Powell says "We can go bottom next week" that would probably make the players nervous as hell... You've got to spin it around in Football and always go with the positives... "We beat Huddersfield and we can be out of the Relegation zone"

Unfortunately gotta remember... We aint playing Saturday ;-)

Always go with the positives, I'm happy we lost. Yeah I suppose so. Be grateful. That might work on 3 years olds who don't eat their dinners but have some respect for the people that don't shat in their pants every day.

It's not a crime to point out a mans failings even if he is Chris Powell.

Was the performance unacceptable? No, we were just completely outplayed by a better side. It's not unacceptable to lose to a team as good as Leicester.

There was another quote from him a few days ago, saying

    http://www.london24.com/mobile/spor...ove_charlton_and_i_ll_fight_to_stay_1_3346226

What you and Vol are doing is using this one quote to imply that Powell is a weak manager, when that is by no means the only thing he's said.

Typical, no-one has said they're happy we lost.

Of course it's no crime to point out Chris Powell's failings. But they need to be balanced against all his successes and given the relevant context.

Yes I'm delighted we lost I cant wait to see us lose again... There is a difference looking at the positives as a Football Fan (Yes we're going to be down when we lose) and a Footballer (You cant afford to be down when we lose as confidence is such an important attribute in Sport)

Its not a crime to point out a mans failings but make sure your qualified to do the role before you point out the failings... We say a Football Manager is no different to me and you in the work place i.e. You do wrong and you get the sack but it is different...

In the work place you have to go through levels of disciplinary (warnings etc...) before you can be sacked whilst a Manager can be sacked at a whim (Malky Mackay)

At the end of the day when you make a mistake at work (we're humans we've all made them, no matter how big or small) how would you feel if people (who werent even in your profession) went on Forums saying how terrible and useless you are at your job, how would you feel if it was all over the newspapers saying you should be sacked when they dont know how to do your role?

And for everyone reading on here that is a genuine Question... Would love to know how they would feel?

Because at the end of the day your right it isnt a crime to point out Chris Powell's failings but at the end of the day I dont have a UEFA Pro License (I dont even have a Level One Coaching Badge) so in my opinion I dont have the right to say whether he should go or not...
