    Not going to defend the performance today but there is no way Villa deserved to win (How does Lambert do it?) that 4 - 1 or even at all in my opinion. Bassong had a nightmare. But it is an away game against a side that most people would expect to beat us in their own stadium. We have winnable home games coming up now and I feel we will win these and I also feel that our last four fixtures aren't all guaranteed defeats like most on here.

    At least next game we will hopefully have some more key players back and I fully expect us to perform.

    But what is silly is the amount of doom-mongering on here; last week Hughton was in favour and people were saying things like if we play like that all the time we won't have to worry about any of our remaining fixtures. Now one game later he is going to take down (it is literally certain, we are already relegated!) and we need to sack him now because we have Jose lined up to replace him.

    It's very frustrating in our last 3 away games to play against 3 really terrible teams on the day and have no points to show for it but FFS all these knee-jerk reactions ain't helping anything. The Hughton-out stance of many on here is well-documented by now anyway.

    Sorry DM but I stated it was a decent performance against a tired spurs team.
    But I never wavered over my opinion of CH he HAS to go either now, preferred, or at the end of the season.
    I stand by this as I have since last February.
    No agenda just don't think he's good enough.

    Some are knee jerk. The ones who flip back and forth depending on the most recent result.

    I however are not, I'm in favour of keeping him until the end only because I don't see a temporary replacement. Any long term replacement I might want is not going to to come here in our present position.

    He should have gone in the Summer if not before and it is was a lack of vision by the board to do so who where fooled by the money coming through the doors.

    There is virtually nothing in Chris Hughton I find in the slightest bit attractive as a football manager or in the team he puts out.

    @KIO

    No! It's not "bleeding obvious that Hughton has to go" that is just your opinion. Just because you think it doesn't make it correct. IMO Hughton still has us out of the bottom 3 so to sack him when he is doing EXACTLY what was asked of him would be ridiculous!

    @Carrabuh

    Yes, you are right in your first sentence and you weren't one of the posters I had in mind with this thread. You have your opinion, you stick with it and you actually support it with arguments so fair enough to you.

    I don't think it would be knee-jerk, we've rarely strung decent performances together, and at times Hughton has come across as tactically naive, and not having a single sub make an assist or score doesn't reflect well on him. The only reason I'm against it is that I don't see who would come in, and don't believe a new manager could get to know his squad well enough to do better over the 5 key games we've got coming up.

    The plan seems to be to try and muddle our way through the rest of this season and hopefully stay up, then reassess in the summer. We aren't in the relegation zone yet, Cardiff and Fulham seem cut adrift, WBA are struggling, and our home form is still fairly respectable. That's about all the positives I can think of! We have to get something against Stoke, then (I know a few on here don't like the term), but Sunderland and WBA at home are definitely must-win games. That's 35-37 points, giving WBA 10 games to get 10-12 points, and Sunderland 11 games for 11-13 points. Something from Swansea, Fulham (<yikes>), Southampton or the last 4 games should give us enough to stay up.

    They'll all say it wasn't CH's fault, we were unlucky and hope we keep him in the Championship!

    Why should bringing in a new manager suddenly ensure we don´t get relegated, and Mr Marsupial is quite right, there´s no need to treat the rest of us as retarded, just because we don´t agree with your grotesquely one-síded view. Some want him gone, others have almost wanted him gone since he came, and then there are still a few who can´t see any benefit in sacking him now, but if McNally decides it has to be so, would prefer it to be the summer.

    Perfectly acceptable opinion to have, and in my view a lot more sensible than yours, and others, who think that sacking him now would solve all our problems.

    Don't think sacking CH now would really help the situation. As I have said, if you want rid do it in the summer. Thankfully we are still not in the drop zone so no point in taking a huge gamble in sacking him.

    Today was poor and despite what many said before the game I think he got the line up wrong. You know how Villa will play, big man up top and counter attack with pace, but he did not select a side to combat this. Although we have had a huge number of injuries to important players which clearly hinders his choices.

    I think our fans overestimate how good our players are. If we could select our best 11 they are pretty decent but we just don't have much squad depth compared to many larger sides. We have a lot of players who have done well, but lack the quality to push us on.

    Equally, bearing in mind the above I think CH wants to play a style some of these players are not comfortable with, which can end in mistakes and poor performances. This is partly CH's fault and partly the players for not having the quality to adapt. He clearly wants us to play with more control then under Lambert. More patient build up, more ridged structure etc but because some players are not able to play this way it leads to mistakes which lead to poor looking football.

    Finally as much as CH may deserve the criticism he receives the players have to take a good look at themselves. All season there have been too many individual errors and as a player you can't let your head drop like that when you concede 1 goal. They have been sloppy and must take some responsibility.

    I think Narwitch will stay up, there are worse teams down there (not by much mind you). Isn't Huttons job to ensure you survive this season? Judge him at the end of it.

    I have never liked CH and have wanted him removed for more than a year, however now is not the time. We now have to ride out the storm and hope we finish the season above the bottom three. At this time there is no one suitable to replace CH. I think sacking him now would just cause more problems so we need to finish the season with him and his staff. God help us!!!!!

    Moyes would still be very good for a club like ours, I'd welcome him here. I struggle to see how sacking Hughton now would be a good plan, when you watch the effect that Mullenstein and then McGarth have had at fulham or OGS has had at Cardiff or Mel at West Brom, its not like they have shot up the table.

    I agree that more long term we probably need a change for a series of reasons, Hughton has good points but his negative ones tend to really annoy the fan base as a whole and he's not going to be able to win them back on side by doubling down on his good qualities. I would hope however that the decision will be made over the summer when it can be set out properly and the right person can be identified and allowed to come in and make their changes.

    We need an overall change we need to develop different formations and styles of play, doing this mid-way through the season can be hard. We have certain positions where we need to bring in new players and build the team up but that will also have to happen after the season is done.

    DiCanio last season was a fantastic move by sunderland he fired up the players and got them to really play together, not thanking him and letting him go the minute the summer ended was a bigger mistake. Under Hughton I don't think we will be relegated and so don't think a change would help, it could just as easily have a negative effect. Waiting for a new manager to get to know the players and find his best team would take time and with us getting into our run in we probably don't have time.

    I mentioned this on the matchday thread so apologies if you are reading it again.Had we gone behind in both of our last two games but come back to get draws the whole tenor of this would have been different.As far as I see it we have won a game that most would have had us down to lose and lost one that would be seen as,at best, a draw. So in fact we are two points ahead of where most expected us to be.

    Ct, it's been said before and no doubt again after today - it's not so much the results but the manner in which we get beaten. Some made allowances for the landslide defeats at Liverpool & Man City, but when we play a 'poor at home' Villa side and get murdered...................

    The most frustrating thing is that you could see Villa were there for the taking in the opening 20 minutes. They must have thought Wes was already on their team the amount of times they gave him the ball in the middle if the park. Our complete inability to attack with pace meant that Villa could easily cover their mistakes. If we had of given the ball away nearly as much, we'd have already been 3 down!

    I didn't think I'd find anything to smile about after that abject 20 minute spell, but <laugh> <ok>

    can a repetive knee movement that has lasted about a season and a half, still be described as a kneejerk?
