Absolutely we should all believe. How many Saints fans would really have believed we could have picked ourselves up after the Rochdale game, or come back from 2-0 down against MK Dons, or from 1-0 down away at Brighton, or won the last six games to clinch promotion? This is Southampton FC under new ownership and management, and they have a plan...
We can push, but it would be dangerous to go overboard with the chequebook this summer. I wouldn't want us to be lumbered with very highly paid players that we have to pay silly prices to watch or suffer a big exodus of first team players and having to rebuild. That's the consequence of pushing too hard with chequebooks and not getting the result. Operation overhaul never got anyone anwhere, at least not in the immediate-term. I'd be happy to build gradually if that's what it takes. For all we know, we could have the next big thing somewhere in the academy who can take us up on his own.
As an outsider, I would say you'll be in a similar position to Nottingham Forest. In and around the Play-Offs (though more likely to go up by 2014 than them over the past few years).
Trouble is Saints in the past have always done the unexpected. We can never be relied on to do anything, go up, go down, stay in, get out, you name it we have passed or failed the test. Just look at our history. We always still have high hopes always have and always will because yes you are right.........We have to believe..........As always Saints at some time will deliver............
Do you think NC will stay around if he fulfills his promise to Markus and gets us back to the Premiership? After all he's a financial expert not a football man. I don't doubt he cares, but he has another career and, to him, this is a foreign country.
Another interesting question is where does Nicola Cortese expect us to be in 2014?. I think that he is an ambitious man and he must surely be thinking that we will be perfoming at least as well as Everton, or even Spurs but being more self sufficient than either of those two clubs. The BIG money in Football is in the Champion's League and I honestly think that is what NC is aiming for. For the record, I voted for Stoke and I will be delighted if we are at their level in 3 year's time.
Amazing how times change. Go back a few years, did you ever think that you would get to the point that you would hope that Saints could be like Stoke!
Very true Fran, it just highlights the fact that our fall from grace was spectacular and how short sighted the previous regime were. Stoke are not frightened to spend a bit to maintain their position, our record signing is still £4 million for Rory Delap, quite amazing considering what even average Premier League players are worth.
The man did say Champs League, so why not shoot for the sky. Realistically I'll take being a Premier League side!
I'm sorry, but if we ever qualify for the champions league I will run across the St. Mary's pitch naked. And any one of you can hold me to that.
I heard it quite excited our Fran.......£4.00 for Delap.......She phoned her work and booked a half hours overtime so she could bid £4.50 for him. I hear she is quite hopeful of a successful bid........... (Says he running for cover ducking and diving)
Did we think at the turn of the noughties that Man City would be playing fantasy football at the end of the decade (and failing at it somewhat)? Anything is possible!
