In fairness to Toby I agree entirely that from Red Red wine onwards UB40 were dreadful - i like reggae and ska but their later stuff is an insult to the really good acts. Some French stuff is all right - one of the best bands I have ever seen live was Les Negresses Vertes
Angry music nights are the best, with the right cocktail of booze/drugs it's great fun. (^^^^ his pupils are dilated to **** behind those shades)
UB40 ffs? Ersatz reggae for the sort of white people who couldn't face going to scary clubs full of dark faces. Probably get played every week at The White Man's Reggae Club that Lance from "Phone Shop" attends. The Clash did a far better job of giving roots music a white-over; Guns Of Brixton is a bit of a classic of the genre.
The Clash, despite being "middle class white kids", are genuine rock n roll legends. People will still be listening to London Calling 100 years from now. The Stones were also middle class white kids, but only a deaf mute loon would deny their brilliance (go on ER, tell me they were a manufactured boy band).
You've changed your argument now, so are you still trying to say UB40 are ersatz Reggae and the Clash were not? How many dark faces would you see at a Clash gig?
I stand by my original statement, yes. And I definitely remember a few black faces at Clash gigs. In fact I remember Mikey Dread supporting them at the Brixton Academy.
