Love him or hate him, the Irish rider has had an outstanding career. As the winner of just about everything in Europe, he's had the chance to throw a leg over some of the best horseflesh in that part of the world. Here's hoping that his future training efforts yield the same kind of success.
Yes indeed, he is up there with the very best, especially as a 'big race' jockey. Wish him every success as a trainer.
A fantastic horseman without doubt. Did marvellously well to overcome his demons aided by the support of some of the best people in the sport!
I think it was inevitable that Murtagh was going to swap his riding boots for trainer’s wellies, although I had expected him to stick around this season and try to pick up a few rides in the big races. If the training lark had just been half-a-dozen horses for family and friends then maybe he could have continued doing it part-time for a while and concentrated on his riding career. Clearly he plans to give training a serious go and set up a decent size yard. Whether he can attract the owners to get decent enough horses to compete against Ballydoyle, Bolger, Oxx and Weld remains to be seen; but good luck to him.
Is that because of his flat experience, or is he a better horseman? That raises an interesting point. Would someone like Lester Piggott have been just a big a success in the the hunt field?
I just think he must have a much more intimate knowledge of the flat thoroughbred Cyc ......................... could be complete bollocks of course
Johnny is an absolute legend of the racing scene, one of the best I've seen. He will be sorely missed from the saddle and I hope he has half the success training as he did riding and he will be ok. I too would send my horse to Johnny over Ruby Oddy
