Spurs come into the match in 5th place in the table on 50 points with Cardiff in 19th place on 22 points. This will be the 54th time the two teams have met and the first time in the Premier League at the Lane. Cardiff City were founded as Riverside AFC in 1899. In 1908, the club changed their name to Cardiff City and moved to Ninian Park two years later. They joined the Southern League Second Division shorty afterwards. The Bluebirds won promotion to the SL First Division for season 1913-14 and ended the 1914-15 season in third place before football was suspended for WW1. Cardiff spent one more season in the Southern League before joining the Football League Division Two in 1920-21, when they finished as runners-up and won promotion to Division One. The first meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at Ninian Park in August 1921 resulted in a 1-0 win for Spurs with Jimmy Banks scoring the winner. Spurs won the game at White Hart Lane 4-1 a week later with Tommy Clay, Andy Thompson (2) and Jimmy Dimmock all scoring. The first FA Cup meeting came in March 1922 with Spurs drawing 1-1 in Cardiff and winning the replay 2-1. To date, the clubs have played six FA Cup games with Spurs winning three, two games drawn and Cardiff winning once. The clubs met regularly during the 1920s and early 1930s, including two seasons in Division Two. Two matches were played during World War Two in March 1941 with Spurs winning the War Cup game 3-2 at Ninian Park after a 3-3 draw at White Hart Lane. The clubs met for three seasons in Division Two in the 1940s with Spurs winning five of the six matches. From 1952 to 1962, Spurs and Cardiff played 14 matches in Division One with 6 wins for Spurs, 4 draws and 4 wins for Cardiff. At the end of the 1961-62 season, Cardiff City were relegated and only returned to the Top Flight for season 2013-14. Tottenham drew 0-0 at Cardiff in the Second Division in September 1977 and won the game at White Hart Lane 2-1 in Juanuary 1978 with Scottish striker John Duncan scoring both goals. The only Football League Cup match the clubs have contested came in October 2002 with Teddy Sheringham scoring at the Lane. The most recent meeting came in the FA Cup 3rd Round in January 2007 with the clubs drawing 0-0 in Cardiff and Spurs winning the replay 4-0 with goals from Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, Steed Malbranque and Jermain Defoe. During the summer 2013 transfer window, Spurs central defender Steven Caulker moved to Cardiff City for a reported £9,000,000. Spurs won the game at Cardiff in September 2013 1-0 with Paulinho scoring the winner late into stoppage time in the second half. Overall, Spurs have won 29, Cardiff have won 11 and 13 of the 53 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full Results of Tottenham Hotspur v Cardiff City Matches 1921-2014 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Cardiff.... Mark Lawrenson's Prediction for Tottenham Hotspur v Cardiff City (Sunday, 16:30 GMT) Cardiff are in deep trouble at the bottom of the table and, as a rookie Premier League manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a huge task to keep them up. In fact, I look at the Welsh side and think they are doomed. I certainly don't see them getting anything at White Hart Lane. Tottenham looked flat in their defeat by Norwich last week and they are now heavily reliant on Emmanuel Adebayor to lead their attack. A top-four finish for Spurs is still the target for their manager Tim Sherwood but I am not sure they will get it. I would expect them to beat Cardiff, but I would not say the same about their next game, which is against Chelsea. Lawro's prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Cardiff City Lawro's 2013-14 Predictions
Great thread as always, 6061. One thing is for sure, we could do without another blinding performance from Marshall!!! Cardiff are there for the taking. OGS seems to have made no difference whatsoever, in terms of results. 3 points is a must.
We need to play Eriksen in a central role and actually have a bit of width for this one. Make a few changes and put some energy back into the side. Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Rose/Fryers; Lennon, Paulinho, Sandro, Chadli; Eriksen; Adebayor. Not sure that leaving out Soldado's the right thing to do, but he gives us an option from the bench. I doubt Sherwood will omit Bentaleb again though, so my starting XI won't be what we use.
I don't think that they play the same role, so I doubt it. Sherwood will probably go back to a 4-3-3 and use both. Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Rose/Fryers/Naughton; Paulinho, Sandro, Bentaleb; Lennon, Adebayor, Eriksen. That'd be my guess and it looks pretty wonky and lacking in both creativity and width.
I'd go along with that team if Sandro is ok to play again so soon. Otherwise i'm ok with either Capoue or Bentaleb instead. I'm still not certain of the abilities of any of our deeper midfielders to be able to release our wingers/forwards quickly, but that can't be rectified now.
Surprisingly lads, we havent sold out our allocation for the game as yet. Most of our supporters have had a guts full of the EWPL.
I'd love to see: Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Fryers Sandro, Paulinho/ Dembele Lennon, Eriksen, Chadli Ade Eriksen has to play, if Tim doesn't start him after last nights performance and heroics then he needs a kick in the face... Twice. Fryers really impressed me and the only way he'll get better is by playing regularly, Rose is pony so it won't matter if we have a bit of inexperience in the side. Not sure if Kaboul will be fit for Cardiff, if not then Dawson, suppose I'm dreaming, hoping that Kaboul will be fit but I have to hang to that slight chance.
I'd agree providing he is given a free role. Last night correct me if I'm wrong but he vacated the left MF slot rather alot, and Fryers didn't really venture into, did you not see the wide open space called the left wing last night, it was like the deck of the Marie Celeste at times, I'm not sure how evident it was on TV, but if like me you were positioned behind the goal you must have noticed that.
It was bloody obvious to me on TV, despite the ****ty camera angle. They really need to sort that out, too. We don't seem to pick players to suit systems, for some reason. We pick pairings that don't complement each other and tactics with big holes in them. Very strange. Rose's desire to get forward would probably allow Eriksen to cut in from the left a lot in a 4-4-2, providing we have decent width down the right. So what do we do? We pick that system with a fullback that doesn't want to get forward on each flank and a right-winger who almost always cuts inside. The same seems to apply to every variation that we do.
Playing Eriksen LW in a 4-4-2 isn't ideal. It's different if he's LAM in a 4-5-1 where he and the CAM can interchange. You've got the most creative player in the squad playing out of position where no one can cover him if he drifts inside - which is what he'll naturally do as used to playing a number 10 role in the centre - if he's to try and dictate the play from LW he'll have to cut inside more than what most would want compared to a natural winger like Townsend/ Chadli/ Lennon etc. Fryers got up well enough on some occasions, it was more the defensive aspect of his game that impressed me though, he didn't look a headless chicken like Rose usually does. Was also a great lofted pass for Ade's match winning goal.
Nothing we can do about it, UEFA apparently dictate camera positoning, the one on the East stand has been relocated, learnt that on a Stadium Tour.
Typical stupid UEFA decision then, I guess. If it's about the hoardings then I'm sure they could just angle them differently or something.
Precisely PNP, the view of the advertising is far more important than the view of the game....I kid you not!
I agree with everyone else. Eriksen has to play a central role and he needs to be left to just get on with it. I thought he really stepped up last night. He got back and covered quite well, and despite being light weight, he did his best. If his attitude was "**** it, I'm drifting inside to sort this **** out", then fair play to him. The game needed someone to grab it by the scruff of the neck and Eriksen was the key player, IMO. His free kick gave us belief, in what looked like a situation where we were never going to score. He definitely needs to start in this game. I don't know how I feel about dropping Soldado though. Even though many attacks broke down with him, he worked hard and got himself into decent positions. Eventually it's going to pay off for him. Considering everyone is on his back and are ripping the piss out of him, I commend his constant effort. I really hope he turns it round, as he deserves it.
The thing is,how long can we play Soldado, with him not scoring,it won't help us,can't keep saying it will come,Chavs used to say that about Torres, never did
