They did it with chimps but they never yawned back once, however some researchers have said chimps do catch human yawning but not until they are about 5 years old which suggests their empathy progresses as they get older but dogs do it from early age

Chimps are almost exclusively left handed., or favour their left hand over their right.

There's never been a cohesive answer to handedness in humans, what makes 10% of humans left handed? Is there in fact a gene for handedness?

I haven't seen this research so I'm just speculating. The life-cycle of dogs is more accelerated than humans and chimps so they reach maturity earlier. Perhaps that would explain it?
It could be an empathic response, as domestic dogs see their human owners as their pack, so an attempt to fit in with the crowd somehow?

Dogs are the only animals who will follow a pointing finger, even though chimps point, they can't interpret a human pointing.

I don't think religion has worked out the answer to any of it yet .... how's science doing <laugh>

    <ok>

Religion has a strong connection with nature. There's an order of monks called after a species of monkey.

Sorry RHC but RELIGION did not create them as they are. Dependent upon your conviction you may or may not believe that God created them. The religion is a man-made institution that is ostensibly dedicated to the glory of God.

Now you inadvertently raise another issue. Did God create the creatures "as they are" or did God develop or employ processes that have delivered animals as we see them today (evolution if you will). Now I'm feeling peckish so I'll tackle that issue after Lunch! No seriously, I don't have a definitive answer to that!!

    Yes, Capuchins.

Religion creates lots of things but didn't create chimps, as far as I'm aware .....

I said religion because it was an on-going theme with saint following on from his question 'is religion bothered?'

Strange, as so far, I've done the facts, you've done the squirming.

As an agnostic you should have some impulse at debating the daft spectacle of monkey-dung hurled upon science recently on here. but that would be expecting too much of you.

Think you have made your points clear enough on here. Any chance you can move on to something else or are you just going to stay on this thread and wind people up? Plenty of other things to talk about. I mean RHC just made a thread about butterflys!!!!

Good point Dave, do the Religious folks on here proscribe to a more literal version of events I.e. that man was created in God's image and placed as is on the earth above all others.

Or do you take a more blended approach that he crested the building blocks (ID) and just knew where it would go? I'm assuming the finding of 5 variant species of human culminating in us would lean you to intelligent design based evolution?

How would discovering sentience elsewhere effect this human centric foundation in Christianity? I'm not going in the ET direction here but staying at home.

There has been large leaps in our understanding of Dolphins that is starting to suggest that they may well be sentient. They share pretty much all traits with humans that we believed made us unique, complex societies. Complex language structures, teaching young, evidence of future planning etc etc.

There is currently a woman working on translating dolphin language and believes she's not far off.

Now obviously the next bit is speculation, but what if she cracks it and in communication with Dolphins they show self awareness or themselves start expressing ideas on life and death. What would this change regarding your faith?
