It's not just about goals and assists though, even for a winger, it's about overall contribution to play. And I watch quite a few Man U games as my step-dad is a Man U fan and Young is shocking, probably the worst Man U player and that's saying something, and the only thing he's any good at is diving. Furthermore, he was terrible pretty much all of last season too and went over a year without scoring.
His form this season has been dreadful, but he's undeniably a player of great quality when he is in the right frame of mind, and has performed very well for England in the past. I don't see any prospect of him going to the world cup though.
Although I dislike him intently, think I'd rather have Kevin Nolan in this England squad than Cleverly or Carrick.
He hasn't been in the right frame of mind for ages, and you can't be picked on past reputation (well, this is England so you can, but you shouldn't be). Perhaps the conclusion is neither Young or Townsend should be in the squad?
Absolutely. They're both incredibly unproductive. In Lallana, Sterling, Johnson, Chamberlain, Welbeck and Rodriguez we'd have more than enough options out wide, and that's without mentioning players I dislike, such as Milner, and injured players like Walcott. I'm talking about Young and Townsend being 9th and 10th in the pecking order, at best, when everyone is fit.
Where has this meme that Luke's always ill/injured come from? Not certain, but with a quick tally I reckon 23 appearances from 27 in the league. Not too shabby if I'm right. Vin
I just realised we have the captains of both the U19 and U21 England sides too. What a time to be a Saints fan.
Premier League football and international football are clearly very different. And while it is clear that some players are class in the Prem, but completely ****e at international level, it must then be very likely that the opposite is also possible. And since Townsend played amazingly well in those two qualifying games, he deserves to be given the chance to prove that he can do it again.
Very proud Saints fan. 10 players selected from U17 to full squad, 8 from the academy and two captains for their levels. Another academy player in the England squad and the worlds most expensive player banging them in for Real in the champions league. A huge well done to all those saints scouts, coaches and other staff who have worked hard over the last 10-15 years to make us one of the best football academies in the game. Long may it continue...
