Spot on fella, It's mad to think we once fit 75,118 into Roker Park, with lows of like you say around 11,000 and we're now running at a 40,620 average. Attendances fit the time and the circumstances and always will, Just the way it is innit?

    Don't fret over that.

They'll soon go quiet when Brown gets sent off again.

I wonder what the odds would be for one of our larkers to be sent off.

    It's bound to happen.

Marwood: [Withnail picks up a bottle of lighter fluid] I wouldn't drink that if I was you.
    Withnail: Why not?
Marwood: Because I don't advise it. Even the ****ers on the site wouldn't drink that, that's worse than meths.
Withnail: Nonsense. This is a far superior drink to meths. The ****ers don't drink it because they can't afford it.
[he pours the lighter fluid down his throat. He gags and gasps]
Withnail: Have we got any more?
    [Marwood shakes his head]
Withnail: Liar. What's in your toolbox?
Marwood: No, we have nothing. Sit down.
    Withnail: Liar. You've got antifreeze.
Marwood: You bloody fool, you should never mix your drinks!

And neither of you would average anywhere near it if you'd endured over a century of under-achievement, like us...

If we'd won the league 3 times in the 1890s, then twice more before WW1, then again in the thirties.....as well as finishing runners up 5 times....how well would we be supported now?

And if we'd won the Cup twice as well as being runners up twice.....how many fans weould we have?

If Sunderland were only in their 3rd season in the top division and had only reached the SF once back in the 1930s, what might there average gate be ?

Given our respective histories, the attendance disparity is not surprising.

As regards noise, I remember playing Newcastle in the Cup back in 2009 and they had the the whole North Stand...noise was nowt special.

Note Donny, Hudders and Mansfield have all filled that end in league games in Lg 2 and made plenty of noise.

Sunderland don't have two 'big' rugby clubs so anyone into their sport will obviously go to the football but in terms of the OP I don't get the point?

I'm sure we'd sell out our away allocation for this fixture if it was away. I'm sure Southend could cluster 4k people to come watch them away, it doesn't make them a great footballing fanbase.

Anyway, good on them selling their tickets.

Quite a few clubs won as much as them back in those days. Other clubs have won a lot more recently and don't get their crowds. Like Leeds:emoticon-0102-bigsm

We would be entitled to 7,200 tickets at Sunderland. Hope we would sell them but wouldn't guarantee it.

Odd how they only managed to get 16k in the last round but have already sold all their tix for this game.

This must be a big game for them I suppose.

How did we take 7,500 to Sheffield Wednesday on a Tuesday night 6/7 years ago (the 4-2 result)? The tickets weren't cheap from memory, we were playing ok'ish, but yet we packed the place to the rafters. The support must be still there? Was a good game

They had 16,000 for the last round and it is odd they sold 3,750 (a lot of them sold before they knew it would be ourselves, their second nearest PL rivals, or travelling to Brighton one hell of a journey if that had been a 2pm kick off) for this game? As odd as we had 10,000 and would supposedly sold out an allocation of 6,700 if we had been going there? Interesting to see how many we will take if there is a replay.

Considering replays are usually midweek games I would not expect us to fill our allocation at all.

    That was quality.

But it was the first biggish club we'd played in a meaningful match. We'd not been to a ground like that, steeped in that much history for ages.

We'd played Liverpool, Chelsea & Villa in the cup, but back then (and before) we were so ****e nobody took it seriously.

Plus, the majority (me included) turned up on the night, and bought the tickets on the turnstiles.

We were doing quite well. Tickets were cheaper than a lot of other places and not particularly expensive,
