I think I saw someone post pretty much the above. It's just a general point though about sentimentality. The more I hear about Raich Carter the more I think people who were there don't want to believe anyone more recent could have been as good. No doubt he was brilliant but it does seem to be taken a bit far.
I always liked Teddy Sheringham. The under rated side of our Euro 96 strike partnership. No pace but he linked up play well and was great in the air for his size. I just think England played better when he played. Yes all these foreign players mentioned were/are great players but I just don't care enough about them to make them my favourite.
Really? Let's examine who's used the word "best" so far, and in what context... Fair enough. Hardly sentimental. Again, no sentimentality. Hard to argue with that (apart from the spelling). So, as others have already pointed out, it's about favourite, not best. And those who have said "best" have done so in perfectly logical manner.
Gerrard, Alonso, Henry, Xavi. I'm not the oldest on here so pretty much all the favourites I have are still playing.
Suarez.... Put your tin hat on now ElTigre. I don't even like Liverpool but what he's been doing most of this season is just brilliant. And he hasn't committed gross moral turpitude for quite some time now. For a player from the past Gazza. It was great to have an English player like that instead of the usual sort we produce whose main quality is the ability to run and run.
Favourite up-and-coming player at the moment has to be Remy Cabella at Montpellier. Brilliant control and technique, pin-point crossing etc... rumoured to be coming to the Premier League next year. He has the potential to be as good in this league as Hazard, but think it'll take him a year to get used to the physicality of the league as he isn't the strongest.
They've got to be English for me - I find it hard for another player to be a 'favourite' when I don't really care about the outcome of the games they play in, no matter how much I admire their talent. Gazza, Lineker, Barnes, Le Tiss
If I'm not mistaken, this poster himself announced he was sodding off several months ago, yet failed to remain sodded.
Big fan of Mattia Destro as well. I know i've already posted about 12 times but I keep remembering fantastic players
