When your former player comes back to score against you, you start to have second thought about letting him go, That is the case with Jonjo Shelvey. Instead of buying Aspas do you we should have kept him?. What do you think?. Comments:
no. isnt he a number 10? ie same position as Coutinho, Tex,Suso play. if you would rather of had him ahead of any of those 3 then fair enough, i personally wouldn't.
He's a good player, was sad to see him go if I'm honest, however I gotta agree, if we want to constantly push for top 4 (and above in the future), then we need players that are just that bit better than Jonjo. Good luck to the lad though, great goal and much respect in the way he celebrated (or didn't) the goal!
I think his problems would have remained had he stayed, Swans seems a much better fit for Jonjo and it was the best thing for his career to make that move.
Shelvey is a decent player who had and possibly still has the potential to be a top player. But he was never going to reach his potential with us when playing in the shadow of Gerrard, Henderson and Coutinho. Shelvey is an attack minded midfielder who has pace, energy, a good forward pass and a decent finish. He is a better finisher than Henderson and Coutinho. I have no doubt about that. But his over all play is any where near as flexible as the other midfielders at LFC (I'm now including Allen and Lucas). He doesnt have the passing range, the vision or creativity. He also was suspect defensively and was often a red card waiting to happen. I really hope Shelvey hits the best level he can hit but I dont think we were the right team for him any more. Under Benitez, Dalglish and Hodgson maybe. Not in Rodgers style.
He asked to leave for first team football anyway so it was his choice, Rodgers has said many times he wanted to keep him. Hes obviously a good footballer with bags of potential but his attitude is not always the best and he will have to improve a lot before we should regret selling him.
no not really, average prem midfielder to be honest. Even Adam had the odd hollywood goal and pass in him
This 100%. I like the lad but he's a loon who brings as many problems as he solves. Nice goal and top boy for his gesture (even though I wouldn't have had a problem with him celebrating) and I hope everything goes well for him at Swansea but we need to be looking at better than him (and Aspas etc).
It's a shame because I thought he had a lot of potential. The way he performed for the u21's for both LFC and England, and it was clear he was head and shoulders above his peer. The step up from youth football and PL was just far too much and he struggled to impose himself. I think he has a lot of ability but lacking mentally - wish him all the best. P.S The way he pointed his finger at Fergie was the highlight of his LFC career!
I agree with Flappy and Sisu. I've always rated Shelvey highly, and the move to Swansea was something he wanted only to improve as a footballer. He'd have preferred to stay with us but chances to play were never going to regularly materialize with the players ahead of him. He'll still be an English player to watch for the future, I think. We need to remember that Shelvey is the best part of 2-years younger than Henderson (whom I also rate highly), as Jordan turns 24 in June, and Shelvey 22 in a few days time.
The gesture, the Anfield response, and Jonjo's acknowledgement was a #greatfootballmoment It makes Skrtel's contact for the (non)free kick even more pointless and annoying though. Jonjo isn't a Torres who we were glad to see forearm smashed in the face by Agger
For me the guy has to play every week and he was never going to be doing that for us. Saying that he is a different option and gives something different to Coutinho, Suso et al, and shows good versatility. Think he wil develop into a very good player for Swansea and a regular in the England squad. Useful player to have, but we were both headed into different directions
