Serious question when did being a Geordie means being from Newcastle or supporting the Mags? Just been listening to the Angelic Upstarts song Kids on the Street and Mensi sings Geordie kids, now for those of you who don't know the Upstarts they're a punk band formed in the late 70's in South Sheilds and their lead Singer is Mensi who is a passionate SAFC fan so why would he sing about Geordie kids if it just meant Newcastle? I remember when I was a kid that I was proud to be a Geordie as was everyone from the NE from County Durham up to the Scottish Border so when did it all change and you suddenly have to be a Mags fan to be a Geordie?

When I started going to games (1973) it was the hooligan period, and when fights broke out the Fulwell used to sing "Geordie aggro". We certainly considered ourselves Geordies at the time.

The Mackem/Geordie thing didn't materialise until the 1970's, and the association of Geordies being Newcastle was promoted by John Hall and co with his 'Geordie Nation' crap...This is something that I have never adhered to and never will..
I was born in 1967 in Co. Durham & brought up there. Not once have I ever considered myself a geordie & I never will.
This .. I was born in Witton Gilbert, my brothers and sister in Croxdale, My dad was born in Jarrow and my mother in Tudhoe. My dad always supported Newcastle but loves Sunderland to do well simply because all his lads support them. My dad also years ago used to root for Yorkshire in the cricket stuff as it was nearer to us and that was the way it should be. I never fathomed out his ethics like, because he always called the Yorkshire lot, thick lazy bastards during his pit years..
Your Dad was obviously a very special man I'm a very proud Geordie (being from Jarrow) and hate how it gets associated with them black and white ****ers. I reckon about at least a quarter of the SOL on match day are Geordies.
Different generation thinking Joe from before bounds were drawn. I started off by being taken to Sunderland one week then Newcastle the next and this stayed with me and brother, cousins, uncles till they faded away. Learned to love the game first then the team second, but that was unfortunately changed by the tribal system.
I never heard of the word mackem till 1983. I'm from Washington so i'm not really a mackem but as i support SAFC class myself as one as i'm def not a geordie! Anyway it says city of sundland on me wheelie bin haha.

It does mate, but right from Heworth to South Shields is all of South Tyneside and it's a probably 50/50 split. All Geordies though
See I'm different. I go off it when I get called a Mackem. I join in debates about Mackems and Geordies and I will always side with the Geordies 100%
I too am from Shields and my parents always said I was a geordie when I was a kid, just to keep in mind where I'm from (grew up in Chester, Cheshire). But lately I'm quite happy to be a Mackem, not that I particularly give a toss about labels...
thing is I think ..yous talk with slight diff accent... I think ..stand oot a mile .. to Tyneside accent. even I talk a little different to Tyneside people ..as im from about 12 miles north of Newcastle . so am I a northumbrian ..I divent nah lol
